Not 011/y Jo, _(fa,th he) /;u! we re;oyce m • God. Wcdonotonlyrejoyce in our Affiu:bons, mthehope ot Glory,_ but we rejoyce in God too. Not only in the hope of our happ10efs,_ the lnhemance 10 the Saints, (as the Text faith) but in the knowledge of !urn, So that, 111 the k11owlrdge of h1m, is not the means only or limply whereby we come to know what Heaven is, but it is a gre~ter matter, for the top of Heaven IJeth 10 Communion with Go.d, and not only 10 your betng made happy. · And fo you fee now why it is preferred here: So that here beginneth (this is all I have contended for) a new Petition in thefe owords, and I read them thus, (and he that confulteth the Original will find it will bear tt,) That he wott!d give )'Ott eys of; •oztrmi11d m/Jgbttud, to k110W what zs the hope of hi; Ca!Jittg,f!Jc. The words in the Original are, m;4!7t~~v~r -r~f ~;.~,a.p.~r :lir .fltt.vcf«-r, E)'fS of )'Ottr tmderj/andittg en!ightned, in the Accufative Cafe, (to g1ve you the Gram_mati– cal Coherence of the words) it is not in the Dauve Cafe , The eyes of ;ww tmderjlrmdi11g 6ei11g n!light11eJ. But take the words limply and they lie thus, That God would give ; ·ou 'J'fS if' your underflandmg m!Jghttud. There are fome that would make the words before, The Spirit of wifdom tmd revelatio11. tomumate and import the caufes of Spiritual knowledge; and thefe words, The e;•es of your tmderflmzditif. bei11g mlighwed, the act of Spi– ritual knowledge, which is the effect of thafe caufes; and they would make that to be the coherence of thefe words with the other; and they open it handfomly thus. Say they, unto fpiritual knowledge by way of caufation, there are rwo things required; There is lirfr a Spirit of Wifdom, which is a Spirit of Faith: and fecondly of Revelation, which is bringing light to that Faith. They exprefs it well by this limilitude, which I /hall afterward make ufe of. To Bodily light (fay they) there is two things required, There is firfr an Eye to fee with, a faculty of feeing, that is meant by the Spirit of wifdom; the Holy Ghofr giving a power, an inherent principle, a hab1t, a difpofition of Spiritual wifd.om; (for you know he is a wife man, not that hath wile thoughts fometimes, but that hath Wifdom habitually in him; as we ufe to fay, He that is wife of himfelf, that hath a principle of wifdom in him, he is properly wife:) 10 now by a Spirit of wzfdom, they meon that inherent principle of Faith which makes a man wife, that infMfed habit which the Spirit works that is as the new Eye in the Soul. And then, by the Spirit of revt!ati011 i; meant, the light that the Holy Ghofr acts this principle of Faith by; and as the effect of both thefe, he mentioneth the eyes of thezr mi11d being etz!ighttted to kn~w him. The one noteth out the caufes , the othe• noteth- out t,he effects. . But,my Brethren, I will give y<>u a Reafon or two againfr this Interpreta• twn, and fo I will go on; forthe coherence of thefe words is the greatefr diffi· culty inthis Text, the refr will goon more ealily. · • If his meoning were, to pray only for the principle of Spiritual knpwledge m the former words, and the ad of knowledge in t/Jefe latter words, The eyu if_your mwd 6ei11g enligbt11ed, to I:now, ~c. Firfr, He would not have rer– mmated the Spzrtt of wifdom and revel{ltio11 in an act, in the •7thVerfe, as _l1e doth; In the Jmow!edge of him, faith he. Then he comcth with a ne\v bulinefs , Tbe eyes of yOJtr mi11d being etJ!ight•~ed to /mow. Here is a new cauCe of a fecond act, therefore certainly we mufi part them. Here is a Spirit of wzfdo~p 1111dreve!atzon produceth one ad, The kilow!edge of him. Here are eyes tlllzght•ud, which produce a fecond ad, Th.•t yo11 may know, faith he, &c. Certainly therefore, the one doth not note out the Caufes and the other the Ads; !Jut here is an act anfwering the caufe of knowledge in the one and an act of knowledge, anfwering the caufe of knowledge in the o: ther. So now, having fl1ewed the Coherence of the words , I come to the parts of the Text. L 1 T·he
