But Secondly, F,,ther of Glory, that is the Second Title which here he giveth God . We find in other Scriptures, that he is called the God of glory, Act. 7· 2. That Chri!\ is called the Lord of glory, I Cor. 2.8. There are many other Scrip– .tures where he is called Ki11g of glory, Lord of glory, God of glory; but there is not one other where he is called Father of glory but only here, There are fome would read the words thus, they would make a Parenthefis in thefe words, The Godof our Lord Jefus Chn{l, tmd the Ft~thfr ofglory, that is, The God (of otlr Lord .fefiu Chrifl, the F.Itbfr) of gtory•,and fothey make the feMe thus, The God of glory, and the Father of our Lord Je{its Chnfl, joyniog God and Glory together, becaufe it is an uncouth phrafe, the like is not in all the ~cripture again..But my Brethren, we may well advent~re upon the phrafe as it ts, and mdeed tt heth more fatr m the Ongmal, and that ts thus, that God is the Father of glory. He is called Firfr the Father of glory by way of eminency of Fatherhood, there ~s no fuch Father as he, he is a gloripus Father, and fo by way of Hebraifme, he IS a Father of glory ; that ts a glonous Father, fuch as no Father elfc is. He is called the King of glory, there are other Kings,but he only is the gloriousKing. There are other Fathers, he only is the Father of glory, he is therefore called the Heavenly Father; it is an exprelllon the Scripture in the New Tefiament often ufeth, and in the Lords Prayer it is. It is fuch a kind of exprelllon as you ufe to Children, when you would commend the excellency of a thing to them, you ufe to call it golden, you fhall have a golden Ball, or a golden G irdle, or agolden Coat · becaufe that i1 a notion under which they apprehend the excellencY of a thing: Heaven and Glory are the highefr things we are comprehenove of, when he would (et out how great a God, how gtorious a Father he is, he calleth him heavenly Father, a Father of glory in difrinction to all Fatherhoods.
