to the E P H E S I A N S. Come to the Will and Affections. In a man you know there is Loye, there is~ Joy, there is F'ear, there is Delire. The Holy Ghoft by way of an ~llJflance may Srrmon ll"rr all thefe affections in a man, and yet not m a way of an Alm1ghty power. XXVL Y~u !hall find in 1 J'am.11. 6, it is faid there, that the Spirit of thr Lord came IJ'"'V'"'.,J upoll s~ul, alld be WMtKCeeding mJgry. It was upon a )Ufr occafion' upon an· indi nit offered his People by Nabafb the Ammowte ; he would make a Covenan~ wiih the People, but the tenl'ls were, that be rmght thmfl out a!J thnr ri ht Eyn Hereupon now the Spirit of the Lord tell upon Sa11!, and raif~d up hif anger. The Holy Ghoft fometimes raifeth the affections of wicked ':len,(Saut was fo,)without creatmg any thwg, but meerly munuatJOg h1mfclfand ;oymog of himfelf with their Spirits; as the W1nd ;ovnmg With the Waves of the Sea, you fee it makes them rife : fo doth the Holy Ghoft blow upon mens affectwns fometimesat a Sermon, upon their F'ear he terrifieth them'· upon their Love, upon their Defires, as he did upon Balt~am's, 0 that I mzght dte the death of the righteoru! This is not a work of an Alm1ghty power ; why? SuU, becaufe an Aogel can do as much to the Spnn of a man, an Angel can ftm a man's affections. There are many inftances in Hiftories, how the Devil hath raifed Mens affections to love Women, and Womens to love Men, fo long as the Inchantment hath lafted. Who bath bewitchedJ'Ott? It was a bewitching, that of the GatatimJS, Chap. p. In 1 J'am.16.1}. you !hall read there, that an Evtl Spirit from Godtrou61ed Saul; it did terrific his Spirit. . By this you fee, my Brethren, that the Holy Ghoft can, and. cloth work upon the affections of men; yet all th1s whtle there IS not an Alm1ghty power put forth. Here is ao elevation of a man's Spirits, a ftirring of !lis affections; but yet all this is without a~ Almighty power, why? Bocaufe there is no. change wroaght in him, t~e.re IS nothmg of •. new CreatiOn to mal!e h1m fuuable to Spiritual things as fpmtual wrought m hrm. . . · And that rs the firft Head; He works erther by way of reftramt or outward aiiiftance. AIIiftance I may call it, but I eaU it outward aiiiftance, becaufe it is not a vital difpoution put into the Soul, but only a bringing in of a new light; and a ftirring up of the affectiOns. That 1s the firfl way, whereby I demon– ftrate, that thefe inferiour works of the Holy Ghoft have not an Almighty power accompanying them. The Second Head I propounded is this, tnd I would have you mark it moll of all, if I !hall be able to explain my felf in it. The Holy Ghoft, when he works the{e inferiour works, thefe flriviogs with the Spirits of men, he doth not put in new principles, only works upon the old, and improves them in a fupcr– natur~l way. It is anEdttflion (as I may call it,) iris 11ot aCre.1tio11. .f I will give you an infiance to exprefs it. The Sun works upon the principles that are in the Mudd by its heat, and there are living things begotten in it: The ·Sun (as fome men think) doth not create a new life. The truth is, a Sentitive life is but.the fpirits of the Element, which the Sun concocts and boileth up td fuch a he1ght. But when God made Creatures, then 1ndeed there was Creation; The Sun cloth but meerly work upon the principles in Nature, and boileth them up and concocts them, and there is a Creature produced that bath fame life. But when God created at firft, he made living Creatures immediately, This is the difference between Edttflio~t (as Philofophers call it) out of principles in Nature; and puttmg 10 of new pnnc1ples, The work of Grace is a work of Crta– tioTZ; and why a Creation? Becaufe 'tis ex nihi!o. It cloth not depend upon any pre-ex1ftem matter ; but 1t 1s a putting m of all new. When Adam's Body was made, God did not draw the Soul out of the [lody, as the Sun cloth thefe Creatures out of the Mudd, Ex putrid a matrrid , there being fome feeds of them in it before: But it is Creation, and fo the Schools fa y ; it is a thing that cloth not depend upon Matter, God putteth it in of nothing. This helpeth to exprefs clearly and fully, the difrercnce between the work of the Holy Ghoft upon corrupt Nature in a lower way, and in this higher way l and it diffcrenceth the power, that there goeth not fo much power only to work upon the old principles, as cloth to put in new, There is an Almighty power goeth to the one, there doth not go an Almighty power to the other. · X x • In
