to theE P H E S1AN S. Well a man living in the Church is enlightned by the Law how to worfhip this ~-.. God, rr:ore than what Heathens are ; he knoweth the. Sabbath, and ~he duties So·mon. of publick worlhip and pnvate Prayer. Educauon hkewJfe, and hvmg under XXV!!. the preaching of the Word teacheth htm thts. No~ the Heathens had wates of~ worfhipping their gods, they had Prayers, and S~cnfices, and Fafl.days: He by his Education is directed to the right worlh1p , and there ts all the dtffe· reT~·en Thirdly, Take Heathens, take a Turk, there is a natural devotion, you heard before, in every m•n's heart; that natural devotion that is in every man's heart to a Deity, he befloweth upon the true God, bet~g dtrected to hun by Education, and worlhippeth !urn. Wt~h no more d~vot1on than wha~ a Turk dorh his Mahomtt. There is a devouon m every man s heart, whtch bewg tmproved may be raifed up to the true God. . And then Fourthly, Look what is•the Religion of the Nation, he is zealous for as all Nations in the World are. Saith the Apoflle, Rom. to. 2. fpeaking of th~ 7tws Thty havt a ztal of God; they havefor their Religion, for it is na– tural for ;very man to have fo, to be zealous for that God he profeffeth, and for that Religion he is educated in. TheGentilts had fo. Thus you fee how far, in a Civil man, thefe Natural principles are im– proved, Now, my Brethren, the Holy Ghofi falleth upon the hearts of m•ny men living in the C!1urch with a further work than this; the fame common princi– ples he windeth up flill higher, and yet llill that work falleth lhort of Grace. 'rhere are the fame falfe !!rings flill, only he windeth them up to a higher key ; but the !!rings are the fame !till, but as falfe in the ,one as in the other, on!y mightily improved and wound up. To manifefl this unto you. I told you iirfi, That there is a light of Confcience naturally in every man, whereby he hath a natural knowledge of the Judgment of God, which being improved by Education, amancometh to know for certain, that thofe that do fuch things deferve death. Now the Holy Ghofl goeth with the Law of God that is preached, falleth upon a man's heart, and fetteth this Law home upon the Confcience, and becometh a Spirit of bondage to a man. But yet works bur upon a principle of nature, improves it.So you have it Rom.8.r~,and 20. Wt b,•ve 11otreaivedthe Spirit of 6ottdageagai11 to fear. The Holy Ghofi oecomerh a Spirit of bondage to a man, bindeth his fins upon his Confcience. And whereas now he hath naturally a glimmering light, that there is a Judgment of God againfi fuch Sinners as he is, and having heard it out of the Word, and learned it by Education, he is confirmed in it lo much, that he knoweth for certain that the judgment of God is according to truth; yet he lhilteth off this light. The Holy Ghofl cometh upon him, ana Confcience is a tender thing, it is God's Throne, and' it is as Tinder to Sparks; the Holy Ghofl, I fay, cometh and fetteth this Confcience on fire, all on a light flame. He works but upon the fame matter that is in it already in all this, as he will do in Hell at the latter day; he will then fet all the Confciences of wicked men on fire, all their fins !hall be as fo many barrels of Gunpowder in their Confciences, all on a light flame pre– feorly. And then:fore, whereas he had before but a glimmering li~hr of the pumlhment of fin, now he feeleth it; God letteth into his Confcience which is a ~end~r thing, fcalding drops of his wrath. Here now a man beginn'eth to be m1ghuly wrought upon, bur yet 1t u but the fame principle frill thus wrought upon; for afore Natural light did bur whifper, bur now it crieth a– loud. Now to do this, the Holy Ghofllhall not need to infufe a new principle into you, or give you a Spiritual underflanding; the old Underflanding, and the old Confcience will ferve to apprehend all this. Tbt Wordof God(faith he) u quick mtd powerful, Ht6.4. 12. it will try and learch every vein in a man's heart. He fpeaks it of temporary Believers plainly, it is a threatning againfl them, the types of wh~m were thofe that fell away in the Wil1er11ejs, of whom he fpeai<s tn .the verfes )Ufl before, The companfon the Scnpture ufeth wtll help us in this.
