An Expo(ttivn of the Epifole ~hinted to us only in a touch herein the 19th. vcrfe, Accordi11g (faith he,) to tht Sermo•1 worki11g, (!le. xxvnr. ~ For the opening of this I !hall give you likewife thefe few confiderations, whereof the F1rfi !hall be more general, and yet raifed out of the Text. The general confideration IS this, which hath two thmgs in it. That Chrifr is fet tonh to us, as a pattern, as a fiandard fet up by God, both of what he will be to us, and what he w11l work in us. I fay, he fet up Jefus Chrifr as acommon fiandard, a common pattern. to himfelf, that look what he putteth forth toward . Chrifr out of himfelf, the fame he will put forth to us 1 look what works he wrought in lefus Chri!t, the fame he will work in us. He is a pattern both ofthe affections o( God, the fame affections, the fame difpofition he beareth to Chrill: Ire beareth to us ; and likewife the fame works he wrought upon Chrifr he will work upon us. This is an infinite comfort to Believers, that God hath not only fet up Jefus Chrifr as a pattern that we !hould love him as Chrifr hath loved us, that we !hould follow Chrifi's example and imitate him in all things, our works !hould be like Chrifi's: I fay, this is not all, but for our comfort, (the other is for matter of Duty, but for our comfort,) God bath fer up Jefus Chrifi as a pattern to himfelf, that look what he hath been to Chrifi that he will be to us, look what he wrought in.Chrifr, he will work ic us. He is a pattern, Firfi of the Attributes that God manifefred in Chrift, the fame !hall be manife!\ed in us ; that the Text is clear for. Hath he !hewn ex– ceeding greatnefs of power in Chri!\? 1 pray that J'OU may ktiVW (faith he,) what1s,tht txceedi11g grtat11t[s of hi< powtr to us-ward; the fame he wrought ih Chrifr.· Here is the fame Attribute put forth, the fame power that wrought in Chri!\ works in us. · Then Secondly, He is fet up by God as apattern of the fame works, that is implied in thefe words; Which ht wrought in Chrifl whtiJ ht raifo4himfrom the dead. ' Fitfr bf all Jefus Chrifr is the Pattern fet up by God to himfelf; that ofthe fame Atmbutcs he!heweth forth and manifefieth in Chrifr, the fame he will !hew forth in us. Here is an in!\ance of power, I will give you but one infiance more of love and fa I will pafs from that. Here he faith tht txcuding grtatlstfs of that.. po1Z·trth!li Jilroughti1lChrtjl, works ill tU. Look Joh. 17. 21. and there you lhall find the fame love wherewith he loveth Chrifr he loveth us. ·-l.in thtm · (faithhe,) mldthott itt me, th.11 the Wo.-td may klww that thcu haft /(11t mr, ,wd bd{llovrd them as thott hajllovtdmr. So that Chrifr is fet up by GOcl- as a pattern to himfelf, to lhew forth the fame Attributes in us that he did in him; hen is J'OU fee the fame power put forth to Chri!\ and to us in the words of the Text; here is the fame love put forth towards us as wasrowards him, that thou baflloved them, (faith he,) as thotl haf/lovedmr. He !heweth .how they are one, as he is one with the Father they are one with him, in their proportion, now always love followetb union, aod therefore accordingly as he hath loved him he loveth them. We ufe to love th'e Members and the Head with the fame love, be– caufe WC love the Members in relation to the Head. A Father in Law loveth the Husband and the Wife the Daughter in Law with the fame love, becaufe helo– veth her in relation to his Son her Husband. So doth God love his Children, Members of Chrifr with the fame love he loveth Chrifr the Head ; and he lovcth the Church the Spoufe of Chrifi, his Daughter as he callcth her, Pfal.4)· with the f.1me love as he loveth Chrifi her Husband that is his Son.
