to rbe EPH ES I AN S. SERMON X.XIX.' E P HE S. I, 19, to. Andwhat is the exceeding greQtnefi of his pd'Wer to m– ward, who believe, according to the wor~ng of the might of his power. The fame which he wrought in Chrift, (or, put forth in Chrijl,) when he raifed him from the dead, and Jet him at his own right hand in the Heavenly placer , &c. THat which is faid JJere of_the Refurred:ion and Exaltation of our Lord and Saviour JefusCJmfr, 1s to be underflood two ways. Either, Firil comparatively, as he compar:eth the work in our hearts, or upon us, with the power th2t wrought m Chnil when he ra1fed h1m from the dead. Or, Secondly, the words in the wth. verfe and fo on, are to be con!ldered limply, as feuing before us the R.efurrection and Exaltation of Jefus Chrifl. I mult firfl handle thefe words in their comparifon. The meaning whereof is this; That the fame power that wrought in Jefus Chrifl, in railing him from the dead, and fetting him at God's right hand, works in our Faith, in our believing, Who 6ditw (faith he,') accordmg to thtworki11g of h" mightypowtr, thefame which wrottght i11 ChYJjf, (!)c. You !hall find that the Apoille handles both parts of this comparifon, He fpeaks of the Refurredion and Exaltation of Chrilt, what a great work that was, from the toth. verfe to the end of this Chapter, And then he fpeaks what a . great work it is to raife up our hearts, and to work upon them, that Vs, who were dead in fins and trelj>atfes, God fhould quicken and raife up toge~her with Chrifl, and make us fit in heavenly places; this he fpeaks ofin the Second Chap· ter from the Firfl verfe to the 1 ah. · That which is properto the opening of this tgth. verfe is, tofpeak only of th~ power, both which raifcd up Chrifl ti·om death to life, and which works in us that believe. And to that I am to keep at this time. There are therefore two things to be fpoken to. · Firfl, Tlut there was an exceeding greatnefs of power Jl1ewn forth in Chrifi's Refurredion, and fetting him at God's right hand. Secondly, that in a proportion, there is as exceeding greatnels of power !hewn to us-ward, when God bringeth us to believe. I muil begin w·ith the Fir!l, to Jl1ew you the excetding great11ejs of power in r.zijing up Chn(l. I quoted for that, Ram. r. 4· where it is fa:d he was declared to be tl/e Son of God with power by the Refurredion from the de:j_<j_: And a Pa– rallel pace tp this, (which I then omitted,) is th>t in 2 Cor. •3· 4· where it is fa1d th,lt thoflgh Chrifl WM crucified thrc11gh weaknrfs; he was ltft to all the weaknefs 377 ~ Sermo11 XXIX. ~
