An Expojition of the Epiftle ~ Then Thirdly, r lhall not mention the power of God in general, in Convert· Sermon ing, I have handled that already, and handled itlargely, but only fo far as the X :X: IX. fimilitude will hold forth a like power in the point ofbelie~tingin the point ofFaith, ~ That is the thing I am now to fpeak to. If you ask me now wherein there is the like proportion of power put fortl1 t0ward us that was toward Chri!l ?· I Anfwer ycu, Firll that you muft take in all the works of God upon us firll and tall; you mull take in the firll Refurretlcion and the fecond Refurretlcion , both which the Scripture feems to hold forth. You mull take in all the works of God upon a believing Sour from his firft Converfion ttll God bath fet him in Heaven, take them aU together, and the power that raifed up Chrill from death, to life and glory, holdeth {.,me proportion with that power that lhall work in us firll and !all, before God hath done wi~h us. Now, To lhew you that all the works of God upon us they are a Refurretlci– on. You all take for granted (therefore I lhall not need to fpeak much of that,) that the railing ul' of our Bodies at the latter day, will hold proportion with the railing up of Chnll. But my Brethren, the work of Converfion holdeth pro· portion with it, and our growth in grace, and carrying us on in holinefs holdeth p-roportion with it. I lhall give you Scripture, that both thefe are called Refurrediom: Joh. ~: 20. 2 r. You !hall read there of the Fathers railing up of the dead at the u.verfe, and the Sons likewife·quickning whom he will. Now read on the Chapter to the 29th, verfe, and y,pu lhall find a double Refurredion there mentioned. You have firft the Refurredion of Converfion whereby he works Faith in mens hearts, that you have at the 24th. and 2). verfcs, Ht that htarethmywords, mzd hlieveth 011 him thatfent me, bath tvertajfiwg life, a11djba/J 11ot come iuto co11dtmuation, /1111 is paf/ from death to life; fo faith the 24th. verfe, then he addeth at the 2)th, verfe, Vlriry veri!J lfayuntoyott, the houriuomi11gandnowis, whtnth~ dead fba/J hrar tht voice of the So11 of God, mid they that hear itjball livt.' Here is the firft Refnrredion, He telleth us at the 20th. verfe, that the Father would'!hew him greater works than any he had yet done: Now, in the r It h. Chapte~ you lhall find he raifeth up Lazarw, when Lazartu fiank and had lain four days in the grave; Then read the 14th. Chapter the 12th. verfe you lhall fiod he tells his Apofiles, you have feen faith he, Lazar11s his railing, (for he was raifed at the r 1 t h. Chapter,) when I am gon you lhall do greater works than that, what were thofe greater works they lhould do! They lhould convert Souls, men that were dead in fins and trefpa!fes, they lhould be turned unto God. Our Saviour Chri!l converted few, but the Apoflles they had three thoufand con– verted at one time, as you know there were at the firll Sermon that ever Prter preached. It is hard to inllance what was a greater work than what Chrill did, but only that which here onrSaviourcalleth, that thedead.jbatl htar tht voice of the Sou of God, mzdtht)•thathearitfballlivr. He fpeaksmyBrethrenof Converfion, for 1f you mark it he had faid in the verfejull before, that he that her~reth rny words and te!ieveth on him that Jmt mr, is paf/ from death to ltfe; He ufcth the fame phrafe, I j~y zwtoyo11, the ho11r is comi1zg, mzdtzow is, whm thr deadjbalt hear the voice of the Sou of God, mzd th~ that hear itjballlivt, And then comparing it with the 28th. verfe it appeareth more manifeflly he {peaks there of a fecond Refurrecrion, of a general Refi1rredion. Marvailt not (faith he,) fol' tht hotlY is coming, in the which, at! tha' art i11 their Gravu jbatl httlr his voia mzd/ball comeforth, they that have donegood, to tht Refur• refiio11 of lzft, a11d they that havt do11t evil, to tht Reforretfiou of dam11afi· on. There is this difference between thefe two Refurrecriom mentioned, the one in the 2)th. the other in the 28th. verfe; That that in the 2)th. verfe is fpokcn but of fome, for all men are not converted, they do not rife in that fenfe; they th.1t htar his voice theyjbatllive; but the truth is all do not hear his voice: But when he comes to fpca k of the Refurrecrion at the latter day, faith he, Thr BoHr is commi•zg, i11 which, all that al'e ilt their Graves jhall hear his vPiet, ami
