An Expojition of the Epiftle ~----~- ~ Now therefore thefe two may very well !l:and together, tlut both God the Sermo11 Father raifed him up, and he raifed up himfelf; for all Three Perfons concur in XXX. every work. The father is faid to create, the Son is faid to create, and the ~HolyGho!l: is faid to create: And folikewife ,the father is faid to raife him, the Son is faid to raife himfelf, and the Holy Gho!l: to raife him too, To give you a Scripture punCl:uarto the point in ha~d, the matter of ihe RefurreCl:ion, that both Father and So11 do Joyntly concur m It. Joh11 5. 19, 20. The So11 ~a" do 11othing of himj'elf, bttt what he feet./; the Father do; for what thillgs foever he doth, thefe alfo doth the So11 tikewife. The Son cloth the fame thmgs the Father doth, if the Father ra1feth lum, the Son ra~feth h1mfclf. And mark what followeth at the 21th verfe, For as the Father raifeth up the dead (there is an in{\ance), a11d quicktuth them, evm {o the Son qttickneth whom he will, If the Father and the Son both concur to the quickning of them, then certainly Father and Son concur to the quickning and railing up of the Humane Nature; there– fore 1 Cor. '5·45· he is called a qt~ick11wg Spirit, The firfl Adam (faith he) -wa< m,rde a living Soul, the .feco11d a qwcktri11g Sfirit. The Godhead that is meant by Spirit did quicken him, quicken 'him when he was dead, and raifed him up. And, my Brethren, let me only give you this Confideration about it; it is not in this raifing of Chri{l as it is in our Converfion, therein there is a difference. You fee in raifing up of Chri{l, that Chri!l: himfelf, namely the So11 of God, and the Father did in a joynt manner concur to it; indeed the Body concurred no– thiPg to it, for that was dead, but the Son of God, the Second Perfon, concurred and raifed up that Body and Soul. But fo it is not in our Converfion; our Wills and God's Power, they are not joynt workers together, though he paralleth them in refpeCl: of power, yet in this point they are not alike. In the Second place, Although God the Father did raife up Jefus Chri!l:, yet Jefus Chri{\ as God-mm; did that, by virtue of which he was raifed up, and therefore may be faid to raife up himfelf; though the power was the Fathers, yet he did that which merited, (as I may fo fay) which purchafed that power to raife him up again, Look He#.q.2o. Now the God of Peace, that brottght agai1rfrom the dead Otlr L ord.'frfus Chrifl. Here you fee that God is faid to do it; and he ufetha lit phrafe, (he calleth it, britJgi"g him ag,JitJ from the dead,) for he calleth h1m, That great Shtpherd of the Sheep. The phrafe whereby his death is expre{\ in lfai.5J· is that he was led M a Jheep to the fo~t~gbter; he was led to deoth, therefore how litly doth he ufe a phrafe when he fpeaks of him as the Sbtpherd of the fheep when he was brought again from the dead; 6ro11ght agai1l, is an allufion to the- phrafe ufed in the Prophet, Ledaway. Here i< God the Father's work What followeth? Through the 6/ood of the • evertaf/itJg [ovmant. Here is Jefus Chri{\'s work for his own RefurreCl:ion; he had his hand in it, that it was by Blood, his own Blood, by virtue of which it was done. God had made a Covenant with him, If he would lhed his Blood he would raife him; therefore now as he is raifed by God, fo he is faid to be raifed by his own Blood, he was raifed by the Blood of the Covmmrt: So that Jefus Chri{\ himfelf had a hand in it in this rcfpeCl: alfo, as well as the father. And though I know Divines fay, he merited nothing for himfelf, becaufe all was his due as he was the Son of God, and it is a truth; but I cannot fee but he might have a double title to Glory, and RefurreCl:ion, and all, and might purchafe it and merit it; it was by the Blood of the everla{li11g Covma11t. So in Zach.g.1 t. it is fa(d, he·willdeliver the Prrjimers out of the pit 6y the Blood of the [ovnuwt. Look by what power he cloth deliver poor Souls out of di· flrefs, deliver Captives out of the Pit; by the fame Blood of the Covma»t cloth he deliver Chri{\ himfelf, brought again from the Grave, from the Pit, from the du{l, that great Shepherdof tht Sheep. Then again, for a third ARfwer; Go, take !everal Confiderations about Chrill, and·in one Confideration God the Father is faid to raife him, but in others he raifeth himfelf. Confider him (I remember it is Camero's Anfwcr,) as a Com· man Pcrfon, as the fir{\.fruits of a company of Members that are raifed with him, as a Common Head; and fo God the father is fnid to raife him, faith he, and we are raifed in him by God the Father~ Bur then confider him as a Me· diator,
