to theEPHE S 1AN S. diator, in refpect of fatisfachon to be performed, and to .do the. work of .~-. Mediator him!elf, (whereof Refurrectwn IS one, ) fo faith he, he overcomcth StrmotJ death by his own power, he broke open the Gates of Death and Hell;· he bath XXX. the Keys at his Girdle, and he .lhewed that h~ had the power of death. Here <U"e ~ now two contiderations wherern Jefus Clmflis faid to be ratfcd up by God the Father, and by himfelf. And then Thirdly, here is another, tai<e Jefus. Ghrifl as he is to be afatisfier for fin, to perform the work of Medtanon, fo he raifeth lumfelf. but take·him as he IS to be rewarded for all the fervtce he had done, (as tt is fit'he {hould be,) and the rewarder is God, tor to him he did the fervice : Now faith God you have done your work. I will raife you up, . fo he concurreth in his RefurreCl:ion, as a rewarder.of him; .dtid hJm (faHit he,) bath God 1'0Jfrdt1p. I will add but thefe confiderations abdut it to quicken your Faith, and fo make an end inflamly. . It is a matter of great comfort to us firfl, that Chrifi raifed himfelf, .for it is a fign that he hath fatisfied God, for otherwtfe death would have held him; if he had not loofed the pains of death, thofe deadly pains, if he had not fully paid a price, it had been poffible for death to have held him, but having paid them it was not poffible that he Qwuld be held by tht;m; He roje agazn (faith he,) for o11r jufllficatiou; it is good for us that Chrifl raifed himfelf. Heretn doth our Pro– phet excel that curfed Prophet of the Ttsrkes, Mt~homet, whom they would have to be their great Prophet, he promifed them to rtfe •!;•t.n a Thoufand Years after his death and in our Age, m thefe ttmes wherem we have hved, have thofe Thoufand'Years been expired, and now they have no way to falve the matter, but that when he was dying his voice being weak and faint they miflook him,and that he faid Two Thoufand Years, which they thought he had faid One Thoufand. But we have no fuch Prophe.t as this; Our Saviour Chrifl becaufe he would lhew himfelf to be the Son of God, he appointed to rife •&•in Three Days after, and be kept his word, This Jeftu (faith he, .Acr. 2. 32.) bath God ratfedttp where– of we aOare wit11e)Jes, fie roft agaw for our juj!tficatioll. Here is the great Prophet that was·to come into the World. In the Second place, it is great comfort to us that God raifed him up from the dead. You {hall find it to be one of the names of God, that he i~ faid t.o be God that raifed up Chrifl from the dead. And you lhall find it to be the great object of our Faith, I 'Pet.t.21.Who (faith he fpeaking ofBelievers,) do believe;, Godthat raifed him tJffrom tht dead, mtdgave himglory thatyottr Faith midHope might be inGod. Obferve thefe words. The object oi your Faith is, that God harh raifed up Chrifl from the dead and gave him glory, and he addetl1 that this was done forrhat end, that you might have Faith and Hope in God. You could never have looked up to God with comfort, if you had not look•d upon him as God that raifed tlp Chrifl from the dead, for thereby we !mow now that God is well pleafed with Chrifi,is fatisfied, for he hath raifed him up again; therefore your Faith may be iA God that he acceptetlJ Chrift's fatisfaClion for !inners, fo to believe on him w be ju!\ified by it; ahd in that he raifed him from the dead and gave l~im gloryi :your hope may be in God for the time to come that he will give you glory too, Hath he raifed up Jefus Chrifl 'I He will raife up you alfo. He makes Jefus Chrifl a pattern, (as here indeed in this very verfe the Apoflle doth,)of what God will do to us, which he wrought i11 Chrij/wbw be raifed bim from the dead. Did he raife up Chrift ? He will juflilie thee, which is a Refurrection as you heard. Did he raife up Chri!\? He will farislie thee, which is an attaining unto the Refur• rection from the dead. Did he raife up Chrifl? He will rai!e up thy dead Body out of the Grave, he wtll glonfie tt: We beltevc on that God with a great deal of comfort that raifed up Jefus Chrifl and gave him glory, now we come to bavehope that we /hall have the like. I have often woodred what lhould be the meaning of that place,Rom. 4- (Let me open it unto you a little,) where he fpeaks of jriflt/joillg f',u'tb, Ftwh lb,r> laieth hold 011 Chnjlfor .1uffsjicatiott ; and he inflanccth in .dbr, zham's Faitb; A6rabambelieved ( faith he,) and it was corwted tmto him for n:~hte~ufirefs ;. and he was your Father : Now what was it that .dbr,tb.rm believed l Saitl• he; Not bejng weak i11 Faith, he c•nfidrred 11ot his owtt Bad)' now tiead whm h.e was F f f about
