An Expofition of the Epiple ~ that take him as he is Son of Man, fo he bath authority given him to execute Sermo!l judgment; and he putteth in this to open theprophecy,'Dan. 7· for faith he there XX:X!. at verfe 14. Tothe So11 of Mmt watgzvm 'Domi11i01z, andGlory,_ mzd a King– V""V""'J dom which fhat! not ve dtj/royed, a11d to thzs So11 of Man ( fatth he,) is all judgment givm. Now, You will ask how it is faid (take him as he is the Son of God,) that he !hould be exalted, for he is but as he was? · Yes my Brethren, he is exalted in this fenfe, becaufe his Godhead was obfcu– red and hidden while he was hcre .below: It was his due to have !hined in his Manhood infiantly as he doth now in Heaven, that all men !hould behold his glo– ry as the glory of the only begotten Son of God, as the Apo!\les Peter and Jamts and John did when he was transfigured. Now, he vaileth all this glory ; when he cometh to fit at the right hand of God there he !heweth it; {o that in refpeCl: of manifeftation he is faid to be exalted, for then he was manife!\ed to be the Son of God. · So much for the Perfon that is exalted, how it is true ofhim both as God and Man. . The Fourth thing to be explained is, when it was that he began to be exalted1 The Text plainly faith after his R.efurreCl:ion, The ;;zme power (faith he,) which ht wrought in Chrif/ whm he raifed himfrom the dead; a11d {tt him at his ow11 right hand. .. There are fome Divines that are mightily mifiaken in this, for they would make the fitting at God's right hand, to be the prerogative of the Hypofiatical Union, and fo would make himto lit on God's right hand when he was in the Womb. .But Brethren, the Scripture ruoneth clean otherwife. It was his due indeed then, and his right; but in refpeCl: of his execution, he was but as a King under Age, till he rofe again and Afcended up to Heaven, Therefore you fhall find Ht6; I. J· it is exprefly faid, After he had purged ottrji11s, he fate dow11 011 the rit,ht ha11dof the Ma)efly 011 high; .Afttr, mark that phrafe, it was not till then; fo Heb. to. 12• .Afttr he offered otte perfel? Sacrifice for ji11, he fat dow11 on the right handof God; it was after that. He was like one that is born a King that cometh to act the part of aServant upon a Stage, but when he cometh to fuch a period he throweth off the formof aServant and !heweth himfelf to be a King, and fo cloth Jefus Chrifi; therefore you have it Pbit. 2. 9· He took 011 him theform of a Servant, a11dwas o6edimltlttlo the death; and then it was that God exalted him,he did not enter upon this glory till he had fuffered death;foHeb. 2, 9· and in Revel. 5'. '2, it is faid there exprefly, He wao worthJ to rtceivt ho110tlr, rmdglory, a11d ricbes, &c. becattfe he wMj1ai11. He was firfi to be /lain. It became him firfi to fuffer and fo to enter into his glory. Therefore his fitting at God's right hand was not before God had raifed him. That is the 4th, thing. The Fifth is, th~ place where he fitteth? It is exprefly faid in Heaven. The word in the Original is not Heavnzry places, the word places is put in , but he Jet him at his ow11right hand itt tht Heavmtiu; The Lttthermzs therefore interpret it, he fituth it; Hravnzry things, that is they fay, all his power is exercifed in things Heavenly. But my Brethren, that which followeth confuteth it in part, for he faith, ht is ovtr every 11ame that is •tarned, 110t only ill this World, 6ut at[o i11 that which is to comt; not only Hea– venly things, but Earthly things; fo that not only Heavenly things are meant, though they are not to be excluded, but anfwerable to the phrafe ofjittittg is pro– j>erly intended Her1Vf11ry places, and fo notes out the very place where Ire thus fits, even in Heaven. Heaven is the Court of:he great God,where his Throne is, (as you faw out of .Afl. 7• 49.) and it is tbe place where God hath •ppointedJe– fus Chrifi to be honoured. Only let me fay this, whenhe cometh to judge wtck– ed men, becaufe he will not bring them up to Heaven, ( for none of them fhall ever enter into the third Heavens,) theo he cometh down, and bringeth Heaven down with him, for all the Angels come with hilTl',and he !hall come in the Clouds withalltheglory of hisFather, in the greate!\ Glory and Majefiythat canbe.
