-~ . Serm. YI., ~ !!An Expofitiolf·of the Epifile 4· What is the Spring, both of_this Flefh, and this inherent Cormption, that produceth thefe Lufis, ( wht~h Lufis we obey, and all our Converf. 1 tion by Nature is nothin$ elfe but the fulfilling ofthef~ Lufis) ; he faith, it is our Birth, we have tt by Nature. So he tells us 111 the next words : .A 11 d are the Childrw of Wrath by Nature, evm as others. And as he.tdls us the Order of Corruption thus, and the Pedigree of it, (of pure and meer Corruption fo cobfidered ) ; f01 h~ fhews the Order of the Caufes in the courfe of Nature, according to the fubordination of the Faculties one to another. Man hath an Under/landing, and Man hath· a Will, and there is no Lufi fulfilled, but there is a -c,onfeot of the Will firfr given thereunto. And therefore that which he calls 4!fts in the firft part of the Words, [ In the Lu{ls of 011r Flefo,J when· it comes to the fulfilling of them, lie calls them, the wills of the Flejh; fo it is in the Original, and in your Margins. And fo you have the Analyjis of the Words. I left in the!e Words, [In the Ll!fts of our Flejh,J and I fhall proceed in them. There are four things to be explained. I. What is meant by Flejh? II. Why it is called Flejh? ·('for there is not a partick, nor a word, that is in vain here. Ill. What are the Lufrs of our Flefh, and the Sinfulnefs of them. IV. What it is to have our converfation in thefe Lufrs ? I. What is meant by Flejb ? I told you, by it is meant that inherent Corruption, which fricks in us, and overfpreadeth all ~he Powers both of Soul and Body. That which is born of the Flejh, is Flejb. . When I handled this, I did two things: 1. I gave you an account of the Phrafe, and the R.eafons of it, why inh, erent Corruption is called Flefh. It was called fo by Mofes, in Gw. 6. and it was cal· led fo by Chrifi, and fo the Apofrles ufed it. · . 2. I defcribed the thing i~ felf, and I told you, it was a MaCs, or a Bundle, or Body of finful Difpofitions in Man's Nature, which were become his Nature, whereby the whole Man, and all the Powers thereof, were empty of all good ; and it contained within it, the Se.eds, ·and the Inclinations to all Sins whatfoever. It is calted the Body of the Situof the Fkjh, Col. 2 . I 'Yil-1 not frand to repeat what I then delivered, but will pr?ceed to the , II. Why is jt called, Our Flefo ? . ,,j . . . When God made Man, it is fai~, He made him ;, his Im~ge ; as the !>race that Adam had, it was God's, it was his Image : But you read in Gen. 4· when Man was fallen, he is faid, to beget Seth in bis Image; th!! An account may. ealily be giyen, why it is called Adam's Image becaufc that he finned, and contratl:ed it t0 him!el£ rBu,t why IS it called o11rs 'as here o11r Flej/J? The truth is, becaufe we are themiferableSub– jeB:s of it. So, why is it called, Our Flej/J, but becaufe we are the miferable Sub· jeC.l:i-Of.~ becaufe it is our Nature:,.
