8o An Exprljition of tiJe Epiflle 7~ I. For the privative part. The foundation of all the Sinfulnefsof thcfe De· ~ fires lies in the want of that Image of God, of that magnetick Virtue, that Vir~ tue of the Loadfl:one, that !hould carry up all thefe Defires to God, and unto other thingsfor his filke. This Iron (as I may C1y ) bath loft this magnerick Touch, this Influence; and now it moveth only as Iron. · The Under(bndin it is taken offfrom God, and the Will is taken offfrom God, and fo all the Affem– oris. You have that in Rom. 3· There is none unde>jlandetb, ( namely God) and there"i~ non_e that feek< (that havea will to feek) ajier God.. The one exprelfeth th,: prtvarwn of the Underfl:andmg, the other of the Wtll. The Heart is cut offfrom God utterly, it can?ot go that _way~ therefore, as I laid before, they are called ungodly Lujh. Athetfm, Unbehef, CN. have cut the Heart off ti·om God ftom either aiming at him as his chieft:fl: end, (for he wantetlt Holinefs) or goi"; forth to him, as his chiefefl: Good, for he wants his Image, which makcth a Socl !uitable unto God ; and a Man defireth nothing, but what he knows, and what 1s futtable to him. Hence therefore you have it, in 'Job 27. 10. that a carna! Heart cannot delight himfelf in the Almighty ; there is no fuitablenefs. And in R om. 8. 7· the carnal Mind, it is called, Em;rity againft God. 2. For the pofitive part, The Image of God being thus . gone, ( you have rhat expreffion m RoiJI. 3· 2 5· All Men are come fbort of the Glcr;•o[Gcd; wltere by the Glory of God, I nnderfl:and his Image, that which carried the Heart of Man out to GOd, to glorify him, which made him fl:and under the favour of God in that Covenant of Works; for fo, in I Cor. 11. 7· the Image of God, and the Glory of God, are both made one: Mtm (faith he) is the Glor;, and the Image of Gocl. ) This Image, I fay, being gone, the Soul being deprived thus of that touch, all the Lnfl:ings that it had in its natural Conflitution remain {till There is not a Delire, which the Soul had before, but it hath fl:ill ; and all th~ finful Defires it now bath, are but what were before, take the Nature of the Defires. There is nothing ?f the fubfl:ance of the Body, or ofthe Soul, defl:roy– ed, nor any new Lufl:s put m. Now when God Is thus gone, and Holinds is thus gone, and all the Lufl:ings and Defires of a Man's Heart are left to themfelves, then what do you think is left? I. Here is a Love of himfelf lefi:, (there's one great Lufl:, and the greatefl: of all the refl:.) When Holinefs was there, the Love of God fubjeB:ed the Love ofa Man's felfunto God; now take this Love of God away, and then Self.love is the next Heir, that great Lufl: fl:eppeth tip into the Throne; and that indeed is the very bottom ofOriginal Sin, it is the Spring. 2. I told you, Man·was made fuitable to all the Creatures; there was nothing in this World, but God had framed a fuitablenefs between Man and it: All thefe fititablene!fes flill remain, a fuitablenefs to all Creature-Comforts whatfoever. Now here lies the Sinfulnefs of it, that all thefe Lufl:ings are carried our, and managed by Self-love, (.which is the great Lufl: of all the refl:.) And then, fccondly, they are carried out to all the Creatures, and to all Creature-Comforts, (which indeed the Soul and Body were made for,) rather than unto God. So that the lnfling or defiring of Happinefs meerly for a Man's felf, and the feeking of this Happinefs in thofe things that Man was made for, without God; in thefe iwo cloth lie all that pofitive part ofthe Lufrs of our Flefb, ( for now we defcribe them but ill general. ) And therefore you !hallfind, that in thefe two, vh. Love of a Man's felf, and love of Pleafure, namely in other things than in God, is the fum of all Man's Corruption reduced unto, in that 2 Tim. 3· 2, 4· where he rec– kons np all forts of Corruptions, a great Bead-roll of Sins; and he makes love of Men< felve< to be the Captain, (as I may fo fpeak) the firfl:, the Ring– leader; and Lovers of Pleajitre<, mol'e tha" Lovers of God, to be that which cometh in the Rear: For thefe two are the Spring of all the Corruption in us, and unto thefe two are all our Lufls reduced. And ( as I may rightly exprefs it) as there is never a Vein in the Body ofMan, but there is an Artery, .as we fay, that runs under it; the one carrying Blood, and the other Spirits : So in the Lufl:ings of the Soul ofMan, ~qere runneth a Vein of the Love of Pleafures, or fome other thing than God ; and an Artery of Love of ~Man's felf, that puts Spirits into this. And as the Principles of Motion (.of Life at leaf!:,) are Blood and Spirits in aMan"s Veins; fo are thefe in a Man's Soul. So
