to the EPHESIAN S. for the other fometimes in the Scripture, as 'Bezahath obfervcd upon John 1. i3. ~ out of./War. 10. 35· Now by Wills of the Flefb , he therefOre here meaneth erm. VI. LH.ftr, or Dejires, as 'tis tranfi~ted, ·as he had dorie before. As when inRom. 7. ~ he caileth the Lull:s of a Mans Heart the Law of the .JJ1embers, ( whtch properly are the Lull:s ofthe Body) but he ineans Iikewife all the Lulls of the Min? too:. So here when he calls them the Willr of the Flejb, he meaneth all the mottons of the Body alfo, all thl' Lull~ b.oth ofSoul and Body. But to give you an Account why he calls themWills, tt ts for thefe Reafons. 1 . To !hew that the Defires; the Lullings of the Hearts of Men, they are hot meerly brutilh, they have a tincture ofWill and Reafon in them; ·and tho often: times they are involuntary ( for there are many motions arife before the Will is put forth) yet becaufe the~ are in a Creature that bath Will and Reafon, (which Will and Reafon lhould be too llrong for the rifings offuch Lulls, an~ keep them down) hence therefore they are calle~ W~lls. You !hall fee the fame kmd ofLulls in Bealls as in Men. You !hall fee Prtde m a Horfe, you !hall. fee Revenge,m an Elephant, &c. But yet thefe yery Lull:s that are the fame in Men with thofe that aremBealls becaufe they arem a Creature that bath a Wdl and Reafon to.keep them down; The fault therefore ofall thefe Lulls is laid upon the Will, and they are called the Wills ofthe.Fiefb, and ofthe Mind. Take now a natural Fool, be; tween whom and a &aa there is but a nice dillinaion in appearance; yet thefe tufts in him are fins, not in the other: becaufe he bath a Will and Reafon. But; 2. The chiefReafon why the Apofile here alters his phrafe, and calls them the. WiUs ofthe Flefb, and oft~e Mind, is this; He fpeaks h~rein relation to ACI:ion, of al1ing or fulfilling the Wdls ofthe Flelh, and of theMmd. And therefore to !hew bow it comes to paiS that all thefe Lulls, thefe bnittlh fenfual Lulls that are ih the Fle!h, and in theBody, as well as in the Reafon, do cotne forth to outwArd aCtion; He faith, there is a confent oftheWill; and therefore how in Jam.I. Lull is faid to be the Tempter, but the Will that's the thing t.empted; for that's the Stern and Rudder of all in Man. And (as I !hall tell youm the Obfervation when I come to it) there is no Lull: fo fenfual but befOre it cotnes forth into aCI:, there mull: be the confent ofthe WiU; (for.the Order ofNature ll:illll:andeth) they mull have the Will 1s l'afS and Commiffion for it; and therefore he calls it h~r~ folfilling; Wh~n once they come into aCI:ion, thefe Lull:s are turned into Wills : hence there~ fore they are faid to be the WiUs ufthe Fkjli. . • . . 3· He calls them, WiUs ofthe Flejh, to !hew where the chief feat ofCorruption lies : it lies in the Will. TherefOre Amej111 (as I remember ) when he fpeaks of the Corruption ofthe Will, quoteth this place. And therefore in other Scriptures 1 that which is called the L11jlr of :Men, is called the Wills of Men. Look but in I 'Pet. 4- and you !hall find that that which in the 2d verfe he calleth the L11jis of Men, in the 3d he calleth the Will ofthe Gentiler ; and he calls them fo ir\ op]'O" fition to the Will ofGod, becaufe it is the WiU of Man that mull: confent to the aCl:ings ofthofe Lull:s. Therefore, my Brethren, by the way ; AMan caii never be fuved by any power in this Will. In 'john 1. 13. "-Which Were born not of'Biood, nor ofthe Will of the Flejb, hut o(God. He inll:anceth, you fee, in the Will ofthe Fle!h. "Beza indeed takes it to be meant ofthe feat of the grolfer Corruptions in the fenfual part ofthe Flelh. But furely the Apofile would not inllance in that, as if that !hould have any hand in Salvation ; there was not fo much as any pretence for thiu : his in• tention is therefore to inll:ance in the bell: part, and tire !trength oftlieWill. Take the Will in it felf, in the utte_rmoll:. purity ofit; yet it being a Will ofthe Fle!h, aMan can never be born agam of tt ; he fpeaks of the belt eQdeavoun of the Will. And fo much now why it is called the Wills ofthe F/ejh, I will otdy n?w give you an. Obfervation.cir two froiri whit hat~ bin faid. Of>ferv. r, And the Obfervatton from that whtch was la!t fatd (for from every thmg there might be Obfervations raifed ) is this, That there i1 no L•!fl cometh forth to al1ion.;, but it it by the confent ofthe Will; JM, and of the reajo11ing part too, They are.ca}. led the J:Y.ills ~fthe Flefh, and ofthe Mind, of the reafoning par't.
