to the E PH ESI AN S. a drop ofWater. Therefore the Defires are enraged, like aJvtan in ·a Feaver. ~ Saith he, in Eccle(6. 7· All the labour ofa Man isforhisMolltb, andY_et the App:- ~ tileis not filled. He !peaks of a Covetous Man : The meanmg of lt 1s this, It IS firange (laith he) that although a Man needs no more, and needs ~abour for no more than what will feed him, than what will fill his Mouth and h1s Belly; and ijyo11 have .J/Ileat am/.."'JLayment (faith the Apoflle) be therewith content; and Nature is content with a few things : yet tho Nature be content with a few things, and a Man need labour for no more, yet there is an inordinacy in the very Ap- .petite, a Man mufi have more than will ferve the turn, the Appetite is not filled. 3· Take a Man in a Feaver;and his defire of Drink, or ofwhat will hurt him, is meerly to fatisfy his humour, it is mcerly to pleafe himfelf, and to fatisfy the inordinacy, and for no other end ; it is not to nourifh, he knows it will do him hurt. So now the delires of the Hearts of Men, and their Lufls, they are there– fore finful, becaufe they are carried out to all things meerly for pleafure's fake : They are not carried out to other things for God, (whetherYUI' eat Ul' drinl{_, do all tb the Glory ofG•d) but it is meerly to fatisfy a humour, it is meerly for pleafure's fake, and to pleafe himfelf. Therefore you fhall find flill in Scripture (as in Tit.3. 3.) we are C1id by 'Nature to ferve divers Lufls and Pleafures, they are both joyn'd together; Lovers of Plea.ftms (faith the Apoflle in 2 Tim. 4·) more than lovers of God. And"in Jam+ theyare[aidtocon.ftane upon theirLufts; that is, all that they get it is meerly for their Lufls fake, it is meerly to fatisfy the defire, to fatisfy the humour, all is fpent upon that; and ihat is a!l the fruit thereof. Now then in thefe three things lies the finfulnels of the Luf!s ofMan's heart. 1 !hall give you them in Scripture phrafe. You have three Epithites that are attri– buted to our Lufls. 1. They are called •mgod/1 Lttfls; fo you liave it in Jude v.18. Why? Becaufe they are carried on to all things without God; yea,and in an enmity and oppofi– tion unto Him. T!Jey are taken off wholly from Him, and therefore they are un– godly L•tfls. . And, t 2. They are carried to other things, meerly for a Man's own fake, out oflove unto himfelf, and for ple:ifure's fake. So in the fame 18th verfe of the Epiflle of Jude, ---their own ungodly Lui1s. And therefore for a Man to live to his Lu!ts, I 'Pet. 4· and to live to himfelf, 2 Cor. 5· it is all one. To live to a Man's Lttjls, that phrafe you have in 1 Pet. 4· 2. and, to live to a M ,m's felf, that you have in 2 Cor. 5· I 5· Therefore they are called in Rom. 1. 24. the !ttfls oftheir own hearts. 3· They are called worldly l11jls. You have that in Tit.2.I 4· --denying all•mgod– ly and worldly l11fls. Why ? becaufe when God is gone,, and the defires are carried om·no more unto Him, they run out to all things in the World. And fo now .Y~\1 have the finfulnels, ofthe lufls of Man's nature laid open to you. . I made entrance into the next , which is a more particular explanation of the dtver.lity ofthole Luf!s which the heart ofMan cloth follow. Fulfilling (faith he) the dejirestthe fiejb, and oftbe mind. In the Original it is, the wills ofthe fiejb, and ofthe 111in . I did giv~ you an account ofthat phrale in the !aft Difcourfe, which I will not now fland upon; only I fhall add one or two things more. I told you ~hat all the Lufls, even the Lufls of the Body, and ofthe Mind, be. they what they will be, the poorefl luf!s in a Man, they are all the wills ofthe fle!h,when they are fulfilled: why? ·becaufe that no lufl can be fatis6ed by ailion but the will 111ufl give its confent. God bath placed in Man a fupream Lord and Power, a Wt!l, and that mufl give confent; and when Lufls have once its con,- . fent, ; then they are Wills. Now .here he !peaks of them as fulfilled, therefore he ..ca)ls ~h~m the wills ofthe fiefb and qfthe mi11d. To which only let me add this fur– ther, 1t ts c<irrupuon m the will, frpm whole influence thefe Lufls are called.Wi/ls; tqeW~ll d9th r.ot o,nly give its content to every Lufl that paffeth into ailion, but ~\,dpthoften.ti,mesflrengthen and.l\ir up, and provo\<.e Lufis.
