to the EPHESIAN S. Things, as ofRiches and Honours, and the like:) Thefe, I C1y, are called the lufts ~-, of the mind. l'!e give you Scripture for them both. ~ 1. For thofe Lufis which are in the fenfittvc part, fenfual Lufts; you !hall find it in '}ude v. xo. (peaking there of falfe Teachers, which were cormpt and abo· minable in their w~y, faith he, Theft jjeak._ evil of things they /,z1ow 1101, ( fpiritual things, which they underfiand not, and are oppofite to them, they oppofe mtgh· tily) but what they k._"o"' naturally, a< brute Beafts, m thofc thmgs they corrupt them• jilves; they are given over, C1ith he, to brutifh Lufis. To open this to you a little, you mufi know, that the fecond Epifile ·of 7Jcter, and this of ']ude are parallel Epifiles, and (peak both of the fame fort of Men, according to this Di· vifion mentioned. The Apoflle 'Pete~ h.P fh.ewcd, ( 2 Pet. 2. 8.) the Corrup· tions that arc in the Underfiandmg, the fupenor part ofthefe corrupt Teachers; they were proud, felfwill'd, having Mens Perfons in admiration jilr adva, tage, ( thefe are Lufis in the reafoning part.) Now ']ude here, he faith, that they were not only corrupt therein, but in other Lufts alfo; for faith he, What they f,pow naturally, aJ br~tle Beafts, in thofe things they cm·mpt thcmfelves. I have for– merly taken the meaning of .thefe words to be this, that they came to fin again([ the very Light of Nature; that look what light they had againft grofs Sins, they even finned againft it; and that they had finned away thetr light. I thought, I fay, that that had been the meaning; and tbe truth is, that which deceived me, was the placing of the words in theTranOation; for the TranOation runs thus, What they kz;ow naturally,· m brute Beafts ; but in the Greek it runs thus, What they naturally, m br11te Bcafts, k._now: And fo examining by learned Expofitors, Efti111, and Gerard, and others, I did find, that the meaning of the Apofrlc is clearly this, that thofe things which they know as brute Bea!ls, naturally, (natural Knowledg here being taken, os Efti111 faith, in oppofition to rational Knowledg,) what they know by Senfes in a natural way, as Bea!ls do, in thefe things, faith the Apofile, they corrupt themfelves, thereby lhewmg the further Corruption of their Hearts. So a< his fcope is not to fhe~ the manner of their finning againfl: the Light of Nature, but the matter of thetr finnmg, and that not only in cor· rupt Opinions, but brutifh Lulls alfo; that they were given up to thofe lufis that Beafis were given up to : What they kz;ow, as Beaffs, na/ltrally, fitith he, in thofe things they corrupt themfelves ; as in Meats, and Drinks, and Slccp, and the like: So you have mention of their feeding themfelves witho11t fear, v.J3· and defiling the Flefo through filthy Dreams, v. 8. of this Epifllc of '}11de; and haviltg eps fit!! ofAd11l· tery, &c. as in Peter. In thefe Lufts, faith he, they corrupt themfelves, in fenfual L•tfl.•, namely, that are common to Beafts, of Uncleannefs, and the like. And thefe are the utjls common to Bea!ls. o: You fhall find another fort of L•tfls, that are in the Spirits of Men, which are called the Devil's Lufts; and they are the L.tjls of the Mind. As in 'John 8. 44· Chrifi (peaking there of the Jews, that had a Malice againfi him, faith he, Ye are ofyour Father, the Devil; a'ld the Lujls of your Father ye will do. Mark, as the Apofile had faid of thole corrupt Men, that they were corrupt in bodily lnfis, in fenfitive lufis, fuch as are common to Bea!ls. So Chrifi fpeaks of the Jews, who were malicious and envious againfl: him, and aimed to kill him, and he faith, that they did do the Uifts of the Devil. The Devil, you know, is of a fpirirual Nature, he mindeth not the Lun:s of the Body, he minds not Beau· ty, or any fuch thing ; he is of a fpiritual Nature, and he is taken with fpiritual excelle~cies, therefore he is called, Sfirit11al Wicl-.sdnefs, Eph. 6.. 20. All his Lufts are fpmtual Lufts, Revenge, and Pnde, and Envy, and Mahce, and the like; tbefe are L.tfls of the Mind. They are not called the Devil's Lufis, efficiently, becaufe he fiirs them up in Men; but they are called his L•tfls by way of imitati· on, Men doing the fame lufis that he did : You feel{_ to kj/1 me, faith he : And he is a Murtherer as well as ye, and ye as well as he. Thefe now therefore are the Lufts of the Mind. So then as the Man is divided into thefe two parts, a Body, and a Mind, the feufitive part, and the rational part ; in the one he partakes with Beafis, (you fee, there are Lufis common with Beafisjn Men,) in the other be partakes with Spirits in Devils: therefore there are the Lufis which are in Men altO.
