dn Expojition of the Epi{Ue ~ I will give you one Scripture (to clofe up all) for the proof of this it is in ~~ 2 Cor. 7. r. Let us clean.[e .01/r filves from all filthinefl of the Flefb? ( na:Uely, of the Body,) and of the Spmt. Here you fee, allfinful Lufls, all F1lthmefs what– foever, is reduced to thefe two Heads. How do I prove that all is meant here? All that is to be purged, is reduced to thefe two Heads ; therefore all is meant: And faith he, Growing up to Holinefl in Fear. Therefore now all the Sinfulnefs of Man's Nature, it is reduced to thefe two Heads: eirj:!er bodily WickedneiS fenfitive Wickednefs, inward or outward, in the Fancy, and the like; or intel: lell:ual Wickednefs, fpiritual Wickednefs; as the Schoolmen, and the Fathers upon fuch and the like Scriptures, have grounded this Notion. So now yo~ have the L11ffs of the Mind, and the Lufls alfo of the Fle!h. This is a clear and certain truth, that look how far pleafi1re and defire extendeth, fo far finful lufls extend: As there are pleafures in the Body, and fi-om the defires of the Body, fo finfullufls; fo likewife in the Soul. Some things the Soul takes pleafure in, meerly by the help of the Body, which, when it is out of the Body, it !hall have no pleafure in: other things it takes pleafure in, meerly as it is an intel– lell:ual Subfiance ; for Revenge bath a pleafure in it, it is no bodily lufl, yet it is the fweetefr lufl, to them that are revengeful, in the World. Now then to open thefe more particularly, that I may a little anatomize your Hearts unto you. The Lufls of the Fle!h, they are reduced to two Heads : the one lower, or more fenfual; the other more fuperior. There are ( as I faid before ) the inward and outward Senfes ; for befides Hearing and Seeing, in afMan,and in a Beafl, there is Fancy, which is but a fle!hly faculty, for it is fuited to Buildings, and pleafant Gardens, and a thou!imd of thefe things which are artificial, Beauty, and the like; all thefe are feated in the Fancy, they are not feated in the R.eafon. The Fancy bath a little kind of reafon in it, materially ; it is but a very Mechanick, an Apprentice to the Underfranding, to make !hapes for it, as the Underflanding is pleafed to call them up, to repre– fent its own thoughts to himfel£ You have Fancy in the Night. Whence are all your Dreams ? They are not from your Underflanding fo much, the UnderUanding cloth but heavily and dully accompany them; they are from the Fancy, and the Nimblenefs of it, and the Species therl'. Now you have the fame Fancies awake, only they appear lively in the Night, when you are aileep, becaufe then R.eafon is down; but they are wan and pale, when you are a\yake. I ufe to fay, that Fancy is as the Moon, that ruleth the Night, and R.eafon as the Sun, that rules the Day: When the Sun is down, the Moon is up; but when the Sun is up, the Moon grows pale and wan, tho it remains frill, even when the Sun !hines mofr. Now then there are thefe two forts of Lufls in the fenfitive part; there are Lufrs in the Fancy, and the Lufls in the bruti!h part of Man, in the Body, the more fenfual part. I take it, that is the meaning of John, in 1 John 2. 16. There are the L•ifls ofthe Eye, (faith he) and the L1ifls of the Flejh. By the Lufls of the Eye, he meaneth the Fancy. Walft, 0 yonng Man, faith Solomon, (who are fullefr of Fancy,) in the fight of thine Eyes. And then there are the Lulls of the Fle!h, which are the more bruti!h Lufrs. To dillingui!h thefe two a little: Meats, and Drinks, and Sleep, and the like, all other R.efre!hments to the Body, to the fenfual part of it, are Lufrs of the Fle!h, properly fo called, in opJIOfition to the Lufts of the Eye. ' The Lufrs of the Eye, they are fuch as Beauty, Apparel, Buildings, pleaJant Stories, J efrs, Pomp, and State, and a thoufand of thefe kind of things ; all thefe, they are the Puppits of the Fancy, as I may fo exprefs them. In fills 25. 23. you have a notable place for this.; it istaid there, tbat Agrippaand Berme£ came_ in great Pomp : That outward State and Garb, with fi~e Cl.o::ths, and glonous Attendants, which they were fo pleafed and taken wnh, It ts called, * great
