to the EP H ESI A N S. SERMON VIII. EPHES. 1. j; --·-- .A1id were bj Nature tbe Childrm of Wratb; el'm as others~ T . He Jail: Difcourfe I handled tbefe words; R. uljiUing the Defires ( or WiiJs ) of the Flejb, and of the Mina. T.he Apofl:Je had before in general !hewed, how that the Converfatiop of all Men in the fl:ate of Nature, it is in the Lufl:s of the Fle!h. .A_nd by L11[ls of the Flejh there, he means the Lufl:s of corrupt Nature in general, (as Ftejb in Scripture is ofi:en taken.) But not contented with that, .he cloth particularize the Lufl:swhich are in the Hearts of Men, which in their Lives they do fulfill, dividing them accord– ing to that divifion of l':'ature, of Soul and Body: F11ljiUing the Dejires of the Flejh; that is, of the Body, or thole Lufl:s which the Soul partakes in by reafon of the Body; all thole fenfitive ~ufl:s, both ,of the outward ~enf~s, and ofthe inward Senfes, the Fancy, and the hke : And of the Mmd, that ts, thofe Lufl:s which John calls, L.ffls of the Eye, which are purely r.eafonable, and which have their feat meerly in the Underfl:anding, ;md Mind, and thofe rational Faculties: F11ljiUing the Wills of the Flejh, anit of the Mind. . I opened to you the difference of thefe two in the former Difcourfe, and i fhewed, that according to the Scriptures, all the Siris of Men, and all the Lufl:s in the Hearts of Men, are reduced to thefe two Heads : Either thofe which we have common with Beafl:s, or at leafl:wife are feated in thole Faculties which are common to Beafl:s ; or elfe fuch as are common to us with Devils. I told yol!, that either there are thofe Lufl:s, which are in the mofl: fenfitive part of the out– ward Senfes, or thofe which are in the Fancy, the ObjeCl:s whereof are Buildings, and a thoufand other Artifices of Men, Beauty, and the like: Or elfe they ar<l the Lufl:s which are in the rational part, purely fuch, as Pride in any excel– lency, Envy, and the like. I difcourfed at large of thefe things, I !hall only add this: I reduce many of ·thofe Lufl:s iri i:he Hearts ofMen to the Fancy, not becaufe Beafl:s who have Fancies are capable ofthem, as to fee an excellency in Buildings, and Beauty, and the like~ thefe things fanciful Beafl:s are not capable of: Yet becaufe the Fancy is by particip:uion reafonable in a Man, hence it is, that Men are capable of many Lufl:s.in their Fancies, whereofthey fee no Image in a Beaft, and yet they are not properly the Lufl:s of the Mind, becaufe they are not purely intelleCl:ual, but the Soul is drench'cl in them, by 'reafon of its conjunCl:ion with the Fle!h. I <inly add that, to explain what I faid'\n the !all: Difcourfe, I would not have repeated fo much, but·only in order to fomewhat more, that I mean to fpeak at this time, concerning thefe Lufl:s of the Mind ; and fo I !hall come to the other part of the Verfe : And were hy NatHre the Children of Wr4th, even ,u others. • Concerning thefe Lufl:s I !hall give you one or two general Rules, and fo come off. I !hall not go about now to fet down Notes and Signs of what is the Mafl:er-Lufl: in Men, a thing which elfewhere I have largely handled; but I !ha!~ on~gtve you fome two or three general Rules concerning Lufts, and concerning the L>tfts of the Mind efpecially. · ~ N 2 The 99 ~· Ser11J.
