~n Exp~fition of the Epi{lle ~ without telling of it what his Children !ball Cpend. They are called the Cure Mer– ~ cies ofDavid, And in Pfal. 89. where the C~:>Venant with David is mentioned- If his Children forfake JilY Law, and walk not m my Judgments, if they break 'my Statutes, and keep not my Commandments, and Cuppo[e they do it (ifit may be [uppo[ed) never fo much, Nevertheleft "'l. loving-kjndneft wiU J 1101 utterly taks from the111, 110r foffir "'J. Fa,thfidneftt• fazl, mJ_ Covenant will I not break, o'c. So that they are the Cure MerciesofDavid, for God bath laid Mercies by him unlimitted. Suppo[e they do thus and thus, and never [o much (and his Mercy !ball be Cure to keep them from theSin againll the Holy Ghofi) let them do thus and thus, nevcrthelefs I will be thus and thus merciful to them. He bath laid by in his own purpofes an indefinite Mercy for them. Therefore now,my Brethren ifyou could Cuppo[e that tho[e whom God loves, ibould live in his World in tha~ mixture ofSin and Grace we now are in, unto Eternity, God bath laid by Mer– cies enow to pardon you and to pity you notwithllandiug, and to keep Commu– nion and Fellowibip with you. He that pardoned the Sin of 900 years to .Adam; he would have pardoned 9000 and 9000 after that, even unto Eternity ifbe had continued, [uch aStock and Treafure ofMercy bath God lying by hiU:. Obfcrv. '· The third ancllall Stock which God may be Gid to be rich in, is in the Mer• cies purcha[ed, and that is by the Merits ofChrill : For know this, that all the Merits of Chrill they, arc called the Mercies ofGod ; And why ? Becau[e all the Mercies that he bath laid by, and meaneth aCtually to bellow, Chrifi was to pur– chafe every whit oft)lem. . In Efa. 55· 3· they are called the Cure Mercies of Da• vid: but look in A'Cis 13. 34· where that place in Ef•. is quoted, and they are called the Holy thingsofDavid (fo you !ball find it in your Margcms) as holding forth the Ments ofthe Lord Jefus. That R1ghtcoufi1cfs ofh1S, all the holy things ofChrill, they are called the Mercies of David, becau[e Chrill purchafed tho[e Mercies for the EleCt ; God therefore may well afford to 01ew Mercy. How rich mull he be in Mercy, think you, that befides the Mercies of his own Nature, and the Mercies olbis Decrees and Purpofes, bath the Mercies purchaled by Chrifl:? What a Stock did Chrill bring into this Treafury when he hung upon the Crofs! How did he fill it, even to an overflowing! That is one reafon why God ordain– ed that this Treafiuy ofthe Riches ofMercy ibould be broken open after Chrill's Afcenfion, when both Jew I andGentiles were to be called in: Be is now rich unto all, hecaufc he bath now a Stock come in by the PurchafeoCChrill; He may well now keep a great Houfe, for Jefus Chrill bath laid in Provilion enough. They are called therefore the un[earchable Riches of Chrill; and all tho[e Riches are Mercies bccaufe they purcha[e MercJ_. He bath purchafed Mercy to pardon all Sin, tobefiow all Good. Nay, let me tell you this, though the Merits ofChrifi are not ofthat extent that the Mercies in God's Nature are, yet they are adequate to all the ;Mercies that God means to bellow. God doth not befl:ow one Mercy out o[ Chrill, thercfore we have Peace and Mercy wi!hed from Jefus Chrill: and you have them both in Pfal. 130. 7· Mercy and plenteous Redemption. God is not more merciful in his Nature by virtue of Chrill's Death, but look what Mercies God meant to beflow; Jefus Chrifi, thatwas [orich, became poor, to purchafe them alL And ifwe could Cuppofe (as to illullrate it we may) that God were poor in his own Nature, yet he bath [uch a Mine brought in by Chrifl:,that he may well !hew MercJ_, yea it wcreinjullice for God now not to ibew Merq, for Chrill hath pur– chafed at his Hands that he !hould do it. I !hall give you but an Ob[crvation or two, which I think are natural to the Text, and [o I !ball conclude. The firfi Obfervation is this, Thai God fo lovcth thofe that he means to fave, that ifthey need it, all the Riches ofMercy that arc in him, !ball he laid outfor it. God (faith he) being rich in Mercy, he hath quickned us, and Caved us, and done all things for us. He bath ingaged, inhis own evcrlafiing Purpofes, all the Mer• cies in him to Cave Sinners be bath la1d them all to pawn, he wlll don. And th; rea[on why God will lay out, if need were, all the R1cbes ofMer'!! in him, for thofe he loveth is this: Becaufe that Mercy no way tendeth to profit h1m; . , ~
