God IS not faId to be nch to lnmfelf, b~t unto us; he is rich unto all, faith the Text, R•n1. 10. 12. Nay let me tell you this further, as God needs no Mercy, fo Jtfus Chri!l himftlf needs no Merry; This goodnefs extendeth not unto God, nor cloth It extend to Jefits Chn!l; we mu!! not fay that he was d~altwithal in a way ofMercy, for he could m>rit nothmg to himfel£ as our Divines fay, much lcfs that there !hould be need of Mercy for him, havlng right to all that Glory which is in Heaven, at the very fiift moment, which he was enriched withal as his due; Therefore all this extendeth not unto him but to the Saints that are in the Earth, and tu the Excellent, in whom is all~ his Delight; therefore Merry; and all the whole Riches of it, is wholly for them; ifthey !land in need ofit. And then again, As Mercy is the Riches of God, fo he :iccomit? his Sain.ts and eleCt Children, his Treafure. They are a peculiar Treafure to himfelf, and he laid up this Treafure forthat other Treafure. De11t. 28. 12. If they will do thus and thus, then faith God, I will open my good Treafure; He fpeoks in the Language ofthe old Law, but he types out all the Heavenly Bleffings in Heavenly Placesiri Chri!l. Thofe that are his Children, he will open all his Treafurc for them, if they !land in need of it. In Heaven, what a Tri::afiity is there to be opened, and we are Heirs of all that Treafury. Jefus Chri!l is an Heir, btit he inherited! not Mercy; we only are Heirs ofMere/· Abrahamwas troubled becaufe he had not an Heir to inherit his Riches: Why God bath Riches, and Riches ofMerry that lie by him, and he bath Heirs to inherit it, he will not heap up Riches and have none to inherit them, as thofe in Pfal. 39· but he bath thofe that !hall !nhcrit all thefe Riches ofMcrry that lye by him. His Son needs not Mercy, and himldfneeds not Mercy, as Mercy; therefore he hatb Heirs, and all thefe Riches ofNferry are theirs. Again, another Obfetvation frotn hehce is this. . That the Saints, they do in ~ Obferv. 2 • manner, need all the Riches ofMercy that are in God. For fo the Wdrds likewife· comein, in fuch a coherence after he had fo fet out our Sinful~efs ; God, faith he, being rich in Mercy. Had he not been God, and had all thele Riches ofMercy in him, we had never been favcd, but he being rich in Merry, even when we were dead in Sins, he bath quickned us and f.wed u•. He is rich unto all that call upon him, Rom. 10.11. it is fpqken in relpett ofSalvation, for it is written (faith he) rvhofaevcr caUeth 11p•n the Name of the Lord foall be fwed. Sb that to Salvation the Riches ofMercy that are in God are neceff.1ry. Lcfs would not ferve the turn; ifthere were but one Sinner, and one Sin (let me, fay that) that Sinner for that one Sin, needed in fame refpect the Riches ofthe Mercy ofa great God to fave him. I am God .,,d. not .YI1an, faith he, therrforc J'' are not conjitmcd; And, My Thoughtfare not your Tbought1; for ifmy Thoughts were ds ,yours, were they not the thoughts ofa God? and were not that God rich in Mercy, no one Sfrttler for one Sin could be faved. My Brethren, we need a TreafuryofMercy to fave us. There are two Treafuries that Man hath, which mu!! be taken off and bought out by two anfwerableTreafurcs in God. There is firfl: a Treafure ofSin. I told you before often thoufand Talents: how many thouGnd Talents, ifthey were fummed up,doth every Man of us bnng unto God? And then there is a Treafury ofWrath. Every one is a Child ofWrath by Nature; but he goeth on treafuring up Wrath by every Sin, if God did not put him into a !late of Mercy. Now to take off both thefe Treafures, to outvy them, we need the Riches of Mercy that is in an infinite God. To forbear a wicked Man here till he go to Hell, it is Riches ofMercy, but to fOrbear fuch a Man to Eternity, what Riches will it eo~? But not onlY. to forbear him, but to forgive that Man, and to forgive him fo as to remember ~is Sins no more, what a World ofMercy is there in this? My Bretliren, there is a World ofMercy in every Mercy you receive from God. If thou come!! to the Ordinances, it is Mercy, thou mighte!l have been in Hell ; [ will come to thy SanfJuary in the multitude of thy Merciu. If a Sin·be tq be pardoned by God, Pardon me according to the nmltitude of thy Merciu, Pfal. 51. r. Wa!l thou dead in Sins andTrefpafles? it is the infinite Riches of .JI1erry ofthe great
