An Expojitlon of the EpijUe ~;;;'.~ foa/1 ktm; for I 1viU be b11t a little while ~n>ay, and I mU fend Y"'' the Comforter : ~ And at that day ye fbaU ktow, that I am rn tte Father, and JOII in me, and I inJOH And I wiU love hi1JJ, and manifeJI my felf to him; as it is in verf. 2 I. Anothe~ ' place is, 1 John 1. 2. There he calls Jefus Chrifr, ottr Lift: And that Life wM manife.fled, and we have feen; and bear wttnefl, an_d f!'ew, that eternal Life wat in the Father, and~~ manifeft unto tn. . Here Jefus Chnfr tscalled, eternal Life ; and the Jncarnauon IS called, the Mamfefratwn of that Ltfe; and the Evidence the C<;>mmunhm and Fellow!hip that the Apo!Hes had with him; that is call~d, a bemg mamfd!ed to us : and what follows ? That which we have feen and heard declare n>e 11nto you, that you may have feUowfoip with tH; and tr11ly 011r fellowfoip k Jrlth the Father, and rv1th hu Son Jef1H Chrift. So all Fellow!hip with God the Father, and with his Son Jefus Chrifr, it is the manifefration ofthis Life as it was manifd!ed to the Apoflles themfelvcs. ' So now, in the fourth place, the Image of God wrought in us, is alfo a Prin– ciple of Life; we are quickned in that Image of God, in f{olinefs and R.ighte– oufnefs, by which we Jive to God : The want of it is called Death. On the other fide, inherent Holinefs is called Life : Rom. 8. 7· Th. fpiritttal Mind it Life. Rom. 8. 2. !pecking of the inherent Holinefs in Chrifr's Heart, he calls it, The Law of the Spirit of Life, that it in ChriJi Jeftn. It is evident it was fo, for he oppofeth it to the Law of Sin and Death that was in our Hearts, he !hould be free by the Law of the Spirit Qf Life that was in lefus Chri!1:. Now then to have therefore a vital Principle of the Image of God, whereby a Man is mad~ fit ~nd capable of Communion with God, fuitable to God and Jefus Chrifr, and all h<Jly things, that caufeth him to draw near to God, and to have fuch an inward quickning Principle in his Soul, that enables a Man thus to converfe with God as the reafonable vital Principle enables him to commerce with Men; this alfo' is Life, and a great part of Life. In 'J?..ev. I 1. when the Wimelfes are railed, how is their R.efurrefrion fet torth ? A Spirit of Life came into them ; it is an allufion to the Refurreilion of Men, a new Life was !hot, a vital Principle through all the Man ; fo bere is a Principle fuitable to all fpiritualObjects: It is not as ifan J'.ogel !hould take a dead Man, and aB: him, without putting in a Principle of L;f,"; but when the Holy– Gho!1: isgiven, it comes and quickens a Man; he not only acts the Soul pofitively, but he puts in a living Principle, by which the Soul joins with the Holy·Ghofi in ailivenefs : Therefore all his Performances are called, living Sacriflw ; why ? becaufe all his Actions do not proceed from the Holy-Gho[( only, limply, but from the Image ofGod which the Holy-Gho!1: works in him, and acts and operates in him, fo his Sacrifice ; as the Holy-Gho!! is a living Principle for his part, fo it is a Principle to make a Man alive to God. . It is an excellent expre!Iion of Jefus Chri!1:, Rom. 6. 10. How is Jefus Chri!!'s Life exprefs'd there? In that he /iveth, he liveth to God. What doth Jefus Chri!1: in Heaven, to mind the things of God, to govern the World fo as God may have Glory, and to diffufe Grace into the Hearts of the Saints in Heaven and Earth, that God may have Glory? He lives to God, that is all his Work ; it is an active Life tb?t carries all in the Soul to God, as living in God, fo living to God. There is the like Phrale, Gal. 2. 20. to live in God as a Man's Element, and to God as his End ; he favo'l"'s tire Word of Life, he lives in the Promifes, by thefe things Men live. The Promifes of the Word are the Savour of Life; to a MaLl that bath a Principle in him, they are the Savour of Life; the Promifes of Hea– ven, and Grace, and Happinefs, and Salv~tion, are reli!hed in a fpiritual way; that he purfues it, it is from a fpiritual Life. So that is the fourth thing that I mention, or' what is meant by LifC. Afifth thing that is the root of all, is this, That t~e .Holy-Gho!1: d:we!ls. in the Heart, as the Soul in the Body, and becomes a Mans LJfe. He that IS JO!Oed to the Lord is one Spirit, being made the Temple of the Holy-Ghofr; for the Spirit is the foundation of all fpiritual Life, the Spiritquicknetq, the Godhead ~f Chri!1: quickncch, aqd is uuite<;l to us, dwelling in us; it qui~kneth !he Sptrlt, ., · . • and
