to the E PHESIAN S, Lift ;. hid with Cbrifl in God. I have not all my life, my life is hid with Chrifl: in S'-'"X(V' God. Alas! you have but a little degree, _but reckon your felves alive to God, ~ as Chrifl: is. When he !hall appear, that ltfe that he bath mGlory, you !hall have by virtue of his being quickned. So now you have what is meant by being quickned with Chrifl:. Now, Brethren, here lies plainly the comfort of a Chrifl:ian, That we are qnickned together with Jefus Chrifl:, . therefo~e this life !hall never die; for we are quickned together wnh Jefus Cbnfl:, and m h1m _as our Head,_ and as a Perfon reprefentative of us. Here 1s our comfort, our bfe 1s bound up m .the bundle _of the life of our Lord and Savwur Jefus Chnfl:. Therefore now, tf Jefus Cbn fl: live; ifiliv_s, C1ithhe, youfhalllive; ifineverdie, you.fhall.neverdie. He is (o quickned, that Death bath no more Dommton ov~r htlll, Rom. 6. 10. So f.1ith be to M,rtba, \Vhen !he doubted of the R.efurreC.hon of her Brother, He that belicveth in"" fballtJcver die, belicveff tho11 this ? it is a Point of thy Creed, as true as any Article of thy Creed, believe it, there is nothing truer ; what is the reafon? Becaufe we are qnickned with Cbrifl:, our life is bound up with his ; and as it is in 2 Cor.4.14. as Cbrifl: did rife up by the Power ofGod, fo !hall we. Now then I !hall end in a word. The lafl: thing that I am to [peak of, is the Scope of the Apofl:le, to !hew the Greatnefs ofthe Work ofGod, and our Lord and Saviour Jefus Chril! upon us ; and his Love, in that he~bath quickned us. You fee the Greatnefs of the Grace, and Love, and Mercy of God, that he bath quickned us withjefus Chrifl:. But that !hall be the Obfervation, it is the Apofl:le's fcope, an the main thing he aims at. 1 In the firfl: place, if God had quickned us with this life, as he did Adam, for AdaiJt was quickned, what an infinite Goodnefs had it been! if there had been fuch a life as a Saint bath, to grow up to eternal life; but he did it when we had forfeited all, and weredead in Sins and Trefpalfes. If you had feen Adam's Body, whilfl: it was making of Clay, and formed by de– grees, as God did the World ; and when that Bodyof Clay was made, God put and breathed into itfo glorious a Soul as it was, how fhould we have admired this infinite Work upon him ! But, Brethren, that when we had lofl: this, and were dead in Sins and Trefpalfes; thl!t when we were in our Blood, God foid, Live, Ezeh., 1 6.6. That he fhould forgive us all our Sins (for quickning always carries Pardon of Sin ) ; he bath quickned us with him, forgiving all our Sins. And as he !hewed his Mercy and Grace in pardoning, fo his Power in putting into us a Principle of life, in communicating a greater Power than to raife the dead, the fame that raifed Chrifl:; what infinite Grace and Goodnefs is this? And then; if we reckon that our quickning with Chrifl: cofl: Chrifl:'s death; and that we are quickned for ever with him,and faved; take that in AtJs 3.15. Ye have /<illed the Prince of Life, and him God raiftd : That the Prince of Life mufl: be put to death, and quickned, that we might live ! Our Life cofl: God dear, when it was bought with Chrifl:'s Life: All the Life of Men and Angels, ifthey bad never finned, 1t was but as the L1fe of a Slave to the Ltfe of a Kmg. Dd but confider, he is the Prince of Life ; what a Life he had, and what it was for him that was the Prince of Life to be put to death; and put to death he was, that you might have life. And not only fo, but as your quickning lies, that being condemned, and then being jufl:ified, a Sentence of Condemnation being upon you: fo Chrift was not put to a bodily Death only, but he had our Sins laid on him; he was made a Curfe, and then he was jufl:ified in the Spirit, abfolved from all our Sins, and this was hisquickning; and by virtue of his quickning, we are quickned, in the life of Jufl:ification. I might enlarge this: Rom. 5· 8. Chri,ll's love was corn– mended in this, that he died for qs : Greater Love hath no M,,, thmz that he lay down hw Life, &c. 'joh.I5.13. Let a holy Heart, that is affected with the love ofChrifl:, and of God, confider this ; for Wordsand R.hetorick cannot exprefs it to acar– nal Heart; bm to exprefs it to a fpiritual Heart, how wonderfully will he fraud admiring the Love and Grace of God, and of Chrift.
