to the E P H ES.I A N S. 201 juflified in his own Perfon, he may be juflified reprefentatively in Chrifl. But I ~ fay, there are parts of Salvation it lelf, therefore when he faith, He bath 1uickped ~ 111 together with Chrift, he prefently atldeth, By GY4ce ye are Javed, for qUtckmng is a part of Salvation. So that this is the thing I aim and drive at, that God bath fo ordered all the Bufine!S of Salvation, that free Grace !hall be magnified. So much now for the opening of this firll: thing, what is meant by Grace, both limply in it felf confidered, and as it is a Cau[e of Salvation, that bath [omething in it, Come kind of Notion, fuperadded to Love and Mercy. · Now I ct>me to the [econd, and that is, Saved. I will not ll:and much upon the opening of'that, only this: Saved, is oppofed to what is loft: Save and feek,_that which is loft; fo the Scripture-Phrafe is. Saved, and Grace here, they are well joined together ; for when we were loft, free Grace then !hewed it felf, it entred then upon the Throne. The Apoftle had faid, Dead in Sins, and Children of Wrath, and oppofitely lays, Saved, which imports a Life ; oru'l'lle,t«, Vita, (and fo the Syriack._ and Arabianoften tranOate it) .,.,.,.,;V"'· All Salvationnatha Lifefuppofed to ·be Caved, but not e contra; the Angels live, yet are not [aid to be laved. And the Holy-Gholl: calls that Blef.. fedne!S of the old Covenant of Works Life, but never Salvation, for you are Caved by Grace; and accordingly ufeth a word in the Hebrew, peculiar to the Grace by which we are Caved, importing Mercy, which he u[eth not of that Fa– vour which giveth Life by the Law. But the thing I would e[pecially note out of that wor~, Saved, is this, That we are [aid to be Caved now, now at the prefent. He had no fooner laid, We are quick._ned together with Chr!ft, but inll:amly be cries out, U-are faved. I will give you but one parallel place for it, it is in 2 Tim. I. 9· Who hath faved 111, and cal– ledus with a1t holy Calling, not according to our Work!, but according to his own Purpofe and Grace. God hath called us according1:o his Grace, and bath Caved us. Now what is the reafon that we are [aid to be Caved, when called? I will give you two Rea[ons, and thofe are both in the Text, tho I could give you more ; as, becau[e Calling is the beginning of Salvation, and makes the Work Cure, and gives us a right to it : Behold what ma1tner of Love the Father hath beflowed11pon 111, that we jhpuld be called the Som of God ! Now a" we the · 'Sons of God, and it dothJtot yet appear what we Jhal/be; but we kpow, that when he Jha/1 appear, we jhall be lik,g him. All that we !hall have in Heaven, is but the appearing of what we now have, and are. But to let that palS. Some would jn- . terpret the words thus, We are Javed by Hope: But the Apoflle's [cope is not here to !hew what our Hopes are, but what is; and inUead of faying, By Hope ye areJaved, he plainly f.1ith, by Grace ye are faved. ·Now I fay, there are two reafons in the Text plainly and clearly. Firll:, we are f.1id to be Caved now, becaufe we are now actually under the Do– minion ofGrace (for [o I may expre!S it) which hath undertaken to make our Salvation perfect. Let Grace look to it now, for it i• engaged, and in that refpect Grace is not free ( as I [aid before) and it iswell for us, that Grace bath not that kind offreedom. Ifour Salvation depended upon any thing in us, the Apottle'" could not have faid, ye arefaved; but put Grace and Salvation together, and he might well fay it. And the Apo((!es meaning is this, as if he had f.1id, you have had experience in your quickning and converfion; and hitherto of the Grace of ~od towards you; in quickning you together with Chrift, and [o in drawingyou mto Union and Communion, with himfelfand his Son. Now faithful ishe that hath calledyouintofellow!hipwithhisSon; as I Cor.1.9. and he that bath be– gun will perfect it; as Phi!. I. 5· And ifwhen we were Enemies, we were reconcikd t• C!od by the Death ofhis Son, m1tch more being r<conri/ed weJball befaved b; his Lift. So tfGrace have wrought in you this great Work, quickning you; you may * Cc conclude
