to the EPH ESI AN S. 203 ----------------~--~~~~~----~ Yet notwithltanding, take all thefe, Chrilt, and Faith, and Jufl:ification, an,d ~'1 Heaven in the end, they are all co-ordinate, and from his own free Grace ; xhat ~ is, they do all immediately Bow from his own Purpofe and free Graces to us without dependance one on aijother, in refpell of his Purpofe I fay. And therefore it is !aid, that out ofhis Love he gave Chrilt and the like; and in Heb, 2 . it is faid, that Jejiu Chrifl died by the Grace of God. What was the caufe of the Death ot Chrilt for us? It was the free Grace ofGod in his'everlafl:ing Purpofe, Rom, 8, 32. Having given us hi< Son, howfoaU he not with him alfo freely give 111 all things f So that Cbrift though he was themore excellent Gift, yet he wasa Gift, and all was given with him. He gave Chrilt out ofGrace, and with him gives all things alfo out ofGrac~; and though in execution they arc all to be conveyed to us through Cbrilt, yet m refpell ofhts Wtll, a)ld m refpell ofhts Purpofe, they are all, even Chrift himfelfand all, co-ordinate from that Grace ofhis. So that in that refpell firft, becaufe ofhis everlalting Purpofes, all cloth thus depend immediately upon free Grace, originally upon an abfolutc freedom in God: hence therefore, we arc faid to be Caved only by Grace. All the things we h~ve, are in this rcfpecr, faid to be gracioufly given us by God; fo the Word is in I Cor. 2. I2. becaufe as it is ver. 9- God hath prepared them for thofe that love hint. Therefore he i• called, the God ofaU Grace, I Pet. 5· 20 . even as he iscalled, theGod of all Comfort : for of all the Grace that he beftows upon us,he isthe Fountain, and the immediate Fountain; it was meerly out ofhis Grace; and this wasbefore we had done good or evil, ·Ront. I I. 6. Now then the Grace ofGod towards us, upon which our Salvation in all the parts ofit depends, that Grace whereby we are faved, it isa Soveraign : fo that though the Grace that is in Jefus Chrift, asGod, Man, and Mediatour, is taken up into partnerfhip with the Son ofGod, and therefore our Salvation is attributed to hisGrace, I Tim. I. I4• The GraceofOttr Lord k exceedillg abuuda11t : yet ifyou compare this in order ofour Salvation, to the original Grace in God himfelf, it is but a Gift ofGrace. The Apofile (asZa, chy well obferveth, upon Rom. 5· 13-) [peaks ofthe Grace ofGod, and ofthe Gift by Grace : what me~ns he by 'the Gift by Grace ? Even that very Redemption of our Lord and Saviour Jcfus Chrilt himJelf, forit was the free Grace ofGod that did order that asa Gift to us,for our Saivatton and Juftification. So that in this refpell we are faved by Grace, this original Grace ofGod ; and the Grace that is in Jefus Chrift, take it as it is for us, it is but a fecond Grace, it is but a Gift ofGrace, this is the Fountain, it is Grace given us in Chri(t, ~ Tivt. I. 9· And this is the fir(l: refpell in which we are faid .to beSavedby Grace. • . 2. In refpecr that God bath laid up all our Salvation, and all the Grace by ver· tue ofwhich we are faved, in another, namely in his Son. So that indeed when · we come to the point ofSalvation, it is Grace ftill, take it at the fecond hand, as it is in Chrift ; take it in oppofition to what is in us, or in oppofition to what is a due or a Debt, to what was in the Covenant ofWorks, I C1y that Grace we are faved by, it is laid up in another, and it is a Gift ofGrace (as even now I [aid) not only fubordinate to that original Grace in God, but the Grace by which we are faved, and to which our Salvation is attributed. So that we are never faid to be faved by the Grace that is in us, but by the Grace that is in him for us. It is true, we !hall go to Heaven, and that is Salvation, but it is not by vertue of our Grace, but by virtue ofthat Grace given to Jefus Chrilt for us,to fit in heavenly places, and to polfefs Heaven for us and in our room, till we come thither. So likewife, we !hall rife again, but it is becaufe there was that Grace given to JefusChrilt for us, that he rofe in our (l:ead. Therefore the Words alfo follow in this verCe, he hath raifed us up together with him. So we are jultified by a Rigbteoufnefs, but it is that Grace ofRighteoufnefs which is gracioufiy laid up for us in him. It is not our Holinefs but Chrilt's, it is the Spirit of Life that is in Chrift, Rum. 8, 2. We are Sons, it is true, but it is ftill by virtue ofthe Grace of Son-fi1ip that is in Chrift, which I fay (a& by vihue ofit we are Sons) is a Grace for us, and it was ?-~race to the humane Nature to be united to the Son ofGod, and in thatrefpell lt,tsa_Gracetohimtoo, though he be the natural. Son <;>f God. Therefore we ,are ~td to be made gracious in the Beloved, Eph. 1. 6. Though we have the coun– terpam of all Grace that is in Chrifi; yet notwitManding our Salvation is by the " C c 2 Grace
