HEre are two Benefits more, two parts ofthat Salvation fpoken ofbefore, By GraceJ' flY< faved. As the Apo!Ue faith, there were three caufes of Sin in us (in the I, 2, & 3. verfes) the World, the Devil, and theFle!h or corrupt Nature : So he faith, there are three caufes ofour Salvatiori in God there is Mercy, Love, and Grace; For hb rich Merry, and great Love wherewith he love d 111; By Grace ye arefaved. So there are three parts ofour Sal· vation, which is perfected by degrees. I. Our quickJling, He hath quick_ned 111 together with Chrift. 2. He bath raifed 11.1 up. And 3· Made us fit together in Heavenly places. Thefe two latter they are parts of our Salvation, and they anfwer and corre· fpond to what was done in Chri!l:, who is our Pattern and Head. If you read; Chap. 1. ver, IQ. be [peaks ofa mighlj Power, which he wrortght in Chriji when he raifrd hi111 front the dead, and fit him fit his own right hand in heavenly plaeu . H<!re he faith, making up the redition in this verfe, He bath raifed ~tntptogether, and made 11sfit together in lJeavenlyplaces in Chrifl]ef111. The Difficulties ofthefe Words, they are indeed great ; I !hall endeavour by way ofinterpretation to affoil them asl am able• . The fir!f Difficulty is this. How to de!finguifh that work of quickning, meti· onedin the 5th verfe, from what is here, hath raifed 11s rtp together. Whether this Work ofRefurrea:ion, as here it is mentioned, is intended that of the Soul which we partake of here, or that of the Body, or of the whole Man rather, in the World to come ? Or more generally, whether that thefe two here that now follow, we Works W!jpught in this Life in us? Or whether thofe; which his Power is en· gaged to worli: in us, in the World to come ~ · Now that which makes the Difficulty, are thefe things. ·Firf1, In that we are faid, as well to be raifed with Chri!fin this Life, both in refpea: of SanCtification and Ju!l:ification, as that we are faid to be quickned py him. . I fhall not need quote many places, that in Rom. 6. makes it clear and evi· dent that it is fo, where we are faid to beplanted into the li/zynefs of his Refim e&i– on : And you know, the Refurrettion ofthe Soul is called the fir!f RefurreCl:ion. And fo now [bath raifed 111 up together J fhould be but the fame thing with what formerly he had faid, [bath quichped 111.] And Ml!JCII!IIs, in his Comment upon this place, gives this reafon why the Apo!Ue addeth to quickning, hath raifed 111 up, here in this Life; namely, to expl~in the Words: For faith he, Men or things may be faid to be quickned, which were never dead ; there may be a qnickning, with· ont a Refurrettioll: as it is faid, in I Tim.6.13. that God is he who quickneth all thmgs, that is, that cloth pnt Life into all things: now all things, were not. dead, before fuch time as they had Life put into them.
