dn Expojition of the Epifile ~. ned, when he had the Breath of Li~e breathed into him, yet he could not be ~ fmd to be raifed agam ; therefore ( fatth he) for more dtftinfr explication Gk after the Apofile bad Caid,, He hath qnick_ned "'• he addeth, and /Jath raifed ·us" .i, to fhew thar 1t 1s aqu1~knmg by way of Refurrefrton, we bemg dead in Sins and T refpaffes. Manner, that 1s by refurrecbon of them that are dead. And fo he would have Q,!tcknmg and Refurrefrion here to be both one and to be .both meant of the Soul; as elfewhere the Refurrefrion of the Body'is called qmcknmg: Rom. 8. 11: He th~t rai{ed 11p Chrifl from the dead, fha/1 alfo quicf<!n your mortal Bodies; that ts, ( Gmh he) fhall raife them up. And fo it is ufed of Chrift, I Pet. 3: r8. He was put to death in t~e ~lejh, b.tt quick,zted bJ the Spirit. And that whtch yet firengthneth the ObJe(hon more, viz.. That the Refur– rettion of the Soul !hould be here intended, is this: Bccaufe that that parallel Epiflle to this, the Epifile to theCoioffians, (which we have fo often bad recourfe unto, to inteq'!ret things in this Epi!tle,) when it fpeaks of Q!)ickning and'of Refurreetion with Chrifl:, (as it cloth in chap. 2. v. 12, 13.) it makes tb~m both to be Works of God upon us in this Life : Y01t a;e rifln with him, through the Fa1th of the Operatton of God: Andyou bemg dead m JOIIr Sins, bath be quick_ned together wtth hmt. You fee he menttoneth both, as be cloth here; and it is evi– dent, be fpeaks of the Refurrefrion which we have through Faith, through the Work of God upon us here m tbts Ltfe. And that the Work ofFaith is a Refur– rel.tion, I remember I opened at large, upon the 19th Verfe of the firfi Chapter. And that which yet addeth to this Difficulty is this, That the Apofile here fpeaks of this Refurrefrion, as a thing that is already done, like as he did of quickning before : He bath quick_ned 111, faith he, and bath raifed tn up, and he hatb nJade 11< jit together in heavenly Tlacet• .But yet for all this, I find that mort Interpreters, (and I confefs my felf of that Mind alfo) do judg it to refer ·rather to that glorious R.efurrefrion of the Body, which is to come; the which, why it is faid, Bath raifed 111up, as a thing for the prefent, or as a thing part rather, I !hall give you an account of anon. And the Reafons are tbefe: Firfl; Becaufe the Apofl:le's fcope is, to comprehend the whole Work of God upon us, wherein we are made conformable to Jefus Chrifl:, yea, unto Je– fus Chrift in Glory. and his !Cope is to !hew, that that Power which wrought in Chrift that R.efurrcll:ion of his Body, which raifed him up to that Glory which he hath in Heaven, the fame Power works in us, this whole Work enumerated here. It relateth to, and correfpondeth with the whole Work upon Chrift, fpo– ken of in the firft Chapter, verj.18. and fo on; where he fpeaksofChrift, (who is there made the Pattern of this Work upon us,) and faith thus According to the workjng of bi< might) Tower, which he wrought in Chrift, whe~t he raifld hin: from the Dead, and Jet him at bis own right hand, in the heavenlj Tlaces, Tl:)ere– fore now in making up the Redition, or the Parallel upon us, and ofthe Mercy and Grace towards us, which be works in us, conformable to what be wrought ;n Chrifl:, be mufl: intend the whole Work of our Salvation firfl: and !aft, and efpe– cially that in Glory, becaufe be fpeaks of that mighty Power which wroug?t in C~rift, in railing him up to Glory. He fpeaks there alfo of a Power w~tch tS begun in us, that fi1all go on, and never leave us,till it hatb made us like to Chrifl: in all things ; a Power towards us, wb~ch begins in working Faith, and in gmck– ning, begtnstbete, and bath engaged tt felf to do all that for us, which tt dtd in our Head Cbrifl: Jefus. Now then the ratling up of our Bodies at ]aft, and the glorifying of them in Heaven, it is the great Work of Power; and therefore he,fpeaking ofthe whole Power that works in us, "anfwerable to the whole Work that is in Jefus Chrift, he muft mean the whole Work of Salvatton.under thefe three Heads, of quickning, and railing us up, and makmg us ftt m heavenly Places in him. * Secondlj;
