210 An Expojition of the EpijUe ·~when he comes to make up the Retur~ and the Reddition, he fpeaks of Grace, &rm.XVI. and Mercy, and Love? The reafon IS plamly this, becaufe tho his Power is en– '-'~ ~aged by Grace, and Mercy, and Love, to tlus Refurrell:ion to come,. and to letting of us m heavenly Pbces m Chnl1:; yet notwubftandmg h1s Power is ut forth only m qmcknmg of us; but Grace, and Mercy, a~d Love, is put f!rth both in qntcknmg ofus, and m ratfing us up agam, and makmg us fit in heaven! Places in Chrifl:; by Grace we have thefe two latter now: We are not on!; quickned by hts Power already workmg m us, but by Grace we are raifed toge– ther 111 Chnfl:, and by Grace we fit 111 heavenly Places. m Cbrifl:; but by Power we do not yet, that 1s, the Power thatbath engaged to work it one day, it bath not already wrought tt, not wrought lt wuh Chnft, only wrought it fur us in ChriO: our Head. And this is a far better and more obfervable Criticifffl, than that of Mufcnlus's. for it notes out one_of the greateO: Truths of the Gofpel, that is, the Reprefen~ tattoo of Jefns ChnO: for us : That he as a common Perfon hath received all Be– nefits for us, and we in him arc faid to have received them ; for that is {aid to be done for us in Chrifl, which yet is not wrought upon us. And as forthat which he obferves, That [bath raifed ur up J isadded by the ApoO:lc, to Chew that it is quickning from the Dead; there needed no fuch addi– tion, bec.tufe he had fate! 111 the words .before, When we were dead, he qnick._ned ur. Now a Man cannot be quickned wherihe is dead, but it mull needs be a Refur– rection; and therefore the Refimection of the Soul in this Life is fully included in thole words, and thefe words [bath raifed ur 11p J needed not be added to Chew the manner of quickning, as he would have it. And lo it is an Argument rather for theco~trary; for he would not have repeated the fame thing again, if he had meant by quickning and raifing again, one and the fame thing. And for that in Col. 2. where rijing with Chriji, and quirkped with him, are both mentioned as here, and both as pail: I anfwer ; Firfl:, It is not laid there we are raifed ;,, Chrifl only, as here, but with C,hrifl. And befides, the Apoftl~ here puts a difiinction alfo, to Chew the dtfference ; for he f.1ith, We are rifin with him, through the Faith of the Operat10n of God. Ifhe had fa1d fo here indeed, we muO: needs have concluded, that [bath raifed 111 up] is meant of that R.efur– rection of the Soul, which is all one with quickning. So that to conclude, rho that quickning of us, and raifing us again, are Terms equivalent, and one is often put for tbe other in the Scripture, (as was obferved before, and is plain in J ol.w 5· 2 r.) yet there is a double Refurretli:ion, and a double Qyickning: the one of the Soul in this Life, and that the Apoftle means, v. 5· and the othe" of the Body after this Life, and that the Apoftle in– tends here in this Vcrle. You fhall find them both in John 5· 2 4, 2 5 verfes corn- • pared. There was a double R.elurrection wrought in Chrift ; there w<Is one of his Soul, as I may fo fpeak, when rt was made heavy to the Death, when the Brunt of hisFather's Wrath was over, when he ctied, It ir finifhed, (for I take it, that word, It ir jinifhed, bath relation to that Confli(l: he had with his Father, which began in the Garden, and ended upon the Crofs: and mdeed as thole Pangs that feized upon his Soul, which made him fay, My Soul is heavy unto the Death, were the greater of the two; fo, that Refurre~ion was t~e greater of the two.) Then he had a R.efurrefrton of hiS Body, whtch was ratfed up the third day, and I take it, both thele are included in Al1r 2. 24. asI Chewed in handling the r9th and 2oth Verfes ofthe firft Chapter. Now then, the Apoftle here in– tending to !hew, how that we are raifed up an~werably to Jefus Chrifl,_ firft, be he mentions the Refurrecbon of the Soul m th1s Ltfe, under that of qmckmng ; and then brings in the El.efurrection of the Body under this Phrafe, And hath raifid 111 "P ; and then the Glory of Heaven in this, Hath made rss fit in heavenly Places i11 Chriff. And fo much for the firO: Difficulty. The fecond Difficulty is this : How the Apofile can £Peak in the time prefent, or in the time pail, and intend the Refurrection ofthe Body tO come, and our being in Heaven, and fay, Bath raifed ur up, and hath made 111 fit together m hea– vwly Placer in Chrijl?
