212 !!An Expofition of the Epi{lle ~.being carried thither, is a Pawn of our coming thither likewife: ']ohu 14 . 3 . ~ I go to prepare a 'Place for JOlt, and if I go to prepare a 'Place fqr )'Oil, 1 will come t~gar':, and rccetve yo~t !o my [elf, tbat. wh~re I am, tbere y~ may be a!fo. And as he earned our Nature thtther, fo he bemg 111 Heaven he gtves us his Spirit an earnd'r, that we !ball come thither alfo; as in Rom. 's. 11. If the Spirit of i,i:: tb"t raijed 11p ']ejiu from tbe Dead, dwell tn )'Oil ; he that raijed 11p Chrijl from the Dead, fba/1 "lJO. qnrck.gn )'OUr mortal Bodm, by his Spirit that cln>eUet!J ill )'Oil : Theref~~e the Spmt IS called the Earnefl of our Inheritance. This, I fay, is a bleiled 1ntth, and a certam Evtdence we !ball come to Heaven, yet it is not all thot ts held forth by thts Phrale: For tho the Spirit dwelling in us be a Pawn wcihall be ratfed, and thereby our Refurrection is made Cure becaufe we have the Spirit in us that railed up Chrifl, who therefore is a worki~g Spirit, and will never leave what he takes poffeifton of, to dwell in, till he bath railed it up; yet we arc no where m the Scnpture fatd to be raifed in the Spirit, but we are f.1id (as here in the Text) to be raifedin Ghrijl, therefore it mufl be more than ha– •·ing. a Pawn of ~mr Refurrection in Chrifi·s Refurrection. And yet ifthat were the mtent of lt, tt mtght as well be fatd, we are ratfed 111 the Spirit, as in Chrifl · for the Holy-Ghof'r is a Pawn of that himlelf, as wdl as Chrifl's Refurrection ~ Yea, we are faid to fit in Chrijl. Others therefore interpret it thus, that we are faid to fit together in Chrif'c, be– eaule of a Conformity we !hall be wrought to, like to Chrif'c ; that look as Chrif\ was railed up from the Dead, fo !ball we be, we !ball have the fame R.efurreB:ion of the Body which he had, and the fame Glory in Heaven, in our meafure, which he hatb. But mark it, !'rill I fay, it is not faid, that we are raifed as Chrif'r is railed; that the Apol1le eminently holds forth in Rom. 6. but here it is faid we are raifcd in Chrifl. Others fay, That we are rliled by Right, that by Chri!l:'s Refurrell:ion a Right is conveyed to us to rife again; we have a right to fit in heavenly places, which is made good by Chrif\'s fitting there, therefore we are faid to be Co-heirs with Chrift, Rom. 8. This Scnce I !bould determine and refl in, ifthe full foundation of that Right be taken in alfo, which is, that Chrif'r as by Death purchafed it for us, fo in our Names and !l:ead bath taken poffeifton of it for us, which is more than all the former, and yet fuppofeth them all, and includes them ; namely, That by way of reprefentation, he isthere in our !'read, being as a common publick Perfon repre– feming us, he being railed, and he riling as a common Perfon, he fitting in Hea– ven, an,I he fitting there as a common Perfon for us, that in this refpett we are faid to be raifed 11p, and to fit together in Cbrift, in Chrif'r as our Head. And fo C!Jryfoflom alfo cloth interpret it: The Head fitting there, the Body muf'r needs be accounted to !it there alfo, and for this caufe he addeth, in Chrift. And this is certainly the mof'r genuine meaning of this place, ( tho it may include many of the other Sences in it.) For firf'c, in chap.. r. v. 22. Chrif'r is not only f.1id to fit in Heaven himfelf, but he fits there as a Head: He gave him to be a Head ( !i1ith he there) over a/J things to the Ch11rch; as for influence (as there) fo alfo ( as here ) by way of reprefentation. So that in him, repre– fenting us as the Head cloth the Body, we are faid, being united to him, to fit there alfo. This Notion, of Jefus Chrifl being a common Perfon, and reprefenting us, I have at large handled, and !bewed the Parallel made between .Aclam and Chrif'r herein. In Rom. 5· we are all laid to have finned in Adam, J, whom all have jin_– necl, ( C1ith 'Pan!, [peaking of Aclam,) and were caf'r out of Parldife in him, to have died in him, and we were all curled in him: [, the day tho11 cat eft thereof, thou fbalt die the Death; this brought an univerfal Law upon all Mankind to dte, in Adamall died by virtue of this: So in Jefus Chrif'c, in his being railed agam we are railed, in his fitting in heavenly places we fit. But I will not :nlarge up· on this, any thing to what formerly I have fpoken. JefusChrif'c fits m Hea.ven, not only as a Perfon receiving Heaven for us: As a Guardtan, that bath recetved from a Father Jewels and Writings to be kept for a Chtl?; thus t.ndeed Jefus Chnf\ did receive Heaven, and all things elfe for us, m Gods everlaflmg Purpo· fes : as in Timotby there is mention of a Grace given 11s iTJ Chrijl before the World began;
