to the E P H E S I A N S. God: 0 Death, where is thy Stmg, 0 Grave, where is thy Vitlory? &c. 'Thank.} ke £;.~ to God, which giveth 111 the Vitlorj through our Lord Jefm Chrrfl. The V1C!:ory IS ~ given already, and we can by Faith, faith he,_ triumph over the Grave and Hell and Death already, which giveth 111 VitJor;•, limb he. _ An!i my Brethren, Becaufe that Cprill and we are one, he as a common ~erfon. reprefenting us, (It is a Notion, that will help you to underlland the quotations of Scripture out ofthe Old Tellament andtheNew) therefore you !hall find that what is applied to the Church, 1s hkew1fe m the New Teframent apphed unto Chrifr. As for Example, In lfo. so. 8. It is God thatj•iflifieth, who Jba/1 condemtJ? This is the Speech ofChrill there: Look now into Rom. 8. p. And the Apollle applys the very Speech to all the Elect. Why ? Becaufe Chrill_ and the Church are one,_ and he reprefented them. On the other fide, prom1fcs made to the Church becaufe they were firll true ofChrill, as the Firfi·fruits; therefore in the NewT~Ilament, theyareapplieduntohim; asinHof.rr. r. OutofEgypthave I called"''! Son; it was fpoken there ofthe Church, but becaufe the deliverance ,out ofEgypt, was by virtue ofChrill being delivered out ofEgypt himfelf, there 7 fore in Mat. 2. rs. it is applied untoChrill. So in Heb. 13. (the place I quoted even now) He brought ag~i~ from the dead, our LJ_rd Jefm, thro11gh the Blood of the everlajiing Covenant ; Th1s mZ<eh. 9· rr. IS applied to the Church, 'By the 13/ood ofthy Covenant, I haveftntforth thy Prifoners ofhope, out ofthe Pit. And yet you fee this is applied to the RefurreC!:ion of Chrill ; becaufe that Chrill in his Refur– reCl:ion, was one with his Church, and the Prifoners of Hop~ in Zechary, were -delivered by that Blood, by which Jefus Chrill himfelfwas brought again from the the dead alfo. So alfo that place, in Hof. 6. 2, 3· After two days he will revive m, in the third day he will raife m up, and we Jhalllive in his fight. This though it is fpoken ofthe Church, yet m11 ithath an allufion unto, becaufe ofa ConjunC!:ion with, the Re· furreC!:ion ofCbrill ; and becaufe that Chrill_ and they are 35 one, and he is a com– mon Pefon reprefenting them, therefore that which is applied to Chrill, is applied to tht Church too. So that, in Ifa. 26. 19. Thy dead Men jba/1/ive, togetb,- with my dead BodyJhallthey rife. All thefe, I fay, are mutually applicable to Chrill, and to the Church both, And this is a great Key, for you to underllond many of thofe places, which the Apollles quote out ofthe Old Tell_ament,which otherwife, ifyou take them in their Context, you will hardly make them out that they are direllly fpoken ofChrill; but when it is fpoken ofthe Church, who is one with Chrill, and to whom Chrill was the ~i~ll-fruits, therefore what is faid of the Church, is more eminently fnlfilled in Chrill, becaufe it is faid of the Church by virtue ofbeing firll done in Chrill. So much concerning this; that they are raifed together in Chrift. I might alfo urge it, out of the I Thejf 4· 14. The Apollle there cloth take it for granted, that all Chrillians believe, that Jefos Chrift died, and rofe again; if you believe that, faith he, then he infers this connection from it infallibly, God > foal/ bring thofe thatjleep, through Jejiu, with him; or, through Jejiu, GodJba/1 bring thofe that jleep, with him. For indeed they all died with him, and rofe with him ; therefore when he !hall come a~ainin Glory, they !hall be brought with him: for he is made the Captain oftheir Salvation, in bringing many_ Sons toGlory, and the common Perfon reprefenting them all. There lies therefore the inference of it, Jefus Chrill_ is our Head, and he died and rofe again; therefore we are faid, to be raifed in hi111. I will add but one thing more, for the full opening of this Claufe, and that is this :That ofthe Elect only, and ofthofe that are quickned and are Believers,it can be faid, that they are raifed11p toget/;er in Chrijl. For you fee here that the great Mercy and Love ofGod is !hewn in quickling and in raiji11g "'up together in Chrijl. Wicked Men they are not raifed up upon thofe terms or grounds that the Saints !Joall be raifed up by. They are not raifed up i11 Chrijl. Wicked Men they rile ~ndeed, but they do not rife by virtue: Firfl:, Of the Merit ofChrill's Death, it IS not by the Blood ofthe everlalling Covenant; And the reafon is clearly this, becaufe the purchafeofChrifl:'s Merits, mull needs be Mercy, but to raife wicked Men up at latter day, it is to Punilliment ; T/Jey that have done good, faith he, in Joh. 5· fha/1 rife to the Reforretlion ofLift, and the1 that have done evil to the Rejitr· ~ Ff relfion
