An Expofition of the cpijUe '~ notorious, in a ruanifefl: and glorious way, to the view ofall-:-lfhall give you a Ser. XVI!!. place for it: it is, in 'R..f!m. 9· _22. where the fame Word that is here ufed for fhew• 1..~ ing, it is not there to fhew as 111 a way ofExample, to others to come; for it is fpo• ken offhewing his Wrath upon all the Reprobates ofthe World, and that fhall be found at the Day ofludl?ment; and It IS there ufed only for this,to make known: Mark the Words, What ifGod, wtllmg to fhew his Wrath (it is the C1mc Word) tmd tJJaRg hn Pow<r k..norrm: . So that now [that he nnght fbew in t/,e .Ages to come, or, m the World to come] It IS but this, what follows afterward, in that Rum. 9.23. th<~t he 1Jiight mtdl,f! k..nown the Rich~s ofhis Grace,_ which there he calls, the Riches of /m Glory. And the Truth Is, this Rum. 9· 2 3· IS as clear a parallel to this in the Text, as the I Tim. r. 16. is a parallel to it in the other Sence before mentioned. I could give you other Texts, wherein the Word here ufed, is not only to fi1ew by way ofExample, that God will do the fame to others, but that God will do it openly and glorioufly; as in 2 Thrff. 3· 4· and in Heb. 6. I I. but I will not fl:and to quote and heap up places. This Word likewife [exceeding Riche~J agrees excellently well with thisSence : For what is the manner ofa great Treafure? It ufeth to be hid. Ifo. 45· 3· I will give thee the Treajitres of Darkpefs, and hidden Riches ofjecret 'Places. So becaufe thefe Treafurcs which God means in the Ages to come to bring to Light, are no,; hidden, he puts tblft two together, that he mightjbcw forth the exceedi11g Richer ofhis Grace. Where (my Brethren) cloth he ufe the addition of the. exce<di11g Richu ofhis Grace? No where, that! know of, but here; and why ? Becaufe he !peaks ofthe utmort Manifefl:a_tion, Demonfl:ration and Accomplifhment of the htighth ofthe Kiches ofhis Grace, which fhall not have their Accomplifi1mem till then. And then there is another Confirmation alfo of this Interpretation, and that's this; I told you at firrt, that the Aportle had continued a Difcourfe begun at the 18thverfe of the fir(]: Chapter. It is the longefl: continued Difcourfe that is in all rhe Scripture. Now how begins that t8th verfe ofthat firfl: Cf.apter? He prays thcre, thal they might k_z;ow ••hat is tEe Rtches ofthe Glory ofhis lnherit.mcc in the Saint I, and fo he goes on, and it is a continued Difcourfe to this very vcrfe, which is the Conclufionofit, and the only Conclufion, and he was not come to a period till now. And then here he comes (and with that he concludes all) and faith, there is a World to come, which is the defign and end of all, wherein God will fhew forth the cxceedi11g Riches ofhis Grace to come. And fo now you have the beginning of the Aportle'sSentence, and the end of it, meeting in one Circle of Glory, as I may fo cxprefs it ; Riches ofGlory, he began with, and the expence ofthe Riches ofGrace to procure that Glory, and to work that Glory, is his Conclufion. And fuch a glorious Circle that involves fummarily all things concerning our Salvation, even Heaven and all, I know not in the whole Book ofGod. He begins his Sen· tence with lVchesofGiory, and ends with the RicheJ ofGrace, to be fhewn forth in the World to come, as the accomplifhment ofour PerfeCtion, and of God's De· fign. The Holy-Ghofl: did Cl: retch the Apofl:le's Mind to the utmofr expanfe to inclofe in this Difcourfe ofhis, all the great and glorious things that concern our Salvation. But you will C1y, why cloth he ufe the Expreffion, Riches ofhis Grace, if he in· tends the befl:owing ofGlory in the World to come, and the accomplifbment of our Salvation: why doth he not ufe the Phrafe [Riches ofGiorl J as he had done, Chap. 1. I8. and Rum. 9· 23? The Anfwcr is ready, and it confirms my Interpretation: For in the lirrt place, his [cope here is to fhew the Fountain, which he would magnify, of thofe Riches ofGlory fpokcnof, Cbap. r. r8. Hisfcope is here to magnify God, as _Rich m Mercy, and as having in his Eye to lhew, before he had done, the exceedm~, the . abundant, all the Riches of hts Mercy and ofhts Goodncfs. ~ow then, Rtches of Grace, being the Caufe and Fountain ofall the Glo~y we have m Heaven, therefore when he comes to magnify and glorify it, (that bemg all h1s fcope) he fpeakshere in the Language of the Caufe; he doth not fay, God Will fhew forth the Rtches of .. Glorj,.
