Some eminent Governors in the Univerfities gave him notice, that all the Colleges were well fupplied with Plate, which would amount to a good Va- lue, and lay ufelefs in their Treafuries, there be- ing enough befide for their common Ufe ; and that there was not the leaft Doubt, that whenfo- ever his Majefty should think fit to require that Treafure, it would be fent him. The Meffen- gers that were fent brought all the Plate, and a confiderable Sum of Money, which was fent a Prefent to his Majefty, from feveral Heads of Colleges, out of their particular Stores.' There is a remarkable Order, for the railing of Money, by the famed Committee at Goldfniths- Hall, mentioned in a Trad, entitled, Regzczdes no Saints, nor Martyrs, [ p. 34. ] in the following Words : ' Thefe are to give you notice, by virtue of an Ordinance of the 27th of O2ober laff, you are affeffed to lend the Sum of Fifty Pounds of lawful Engle Money, tobe paid for our Brethren of Scotland, for their afilting of us in this War ; and that you are forthwith to pay the fame to Mr. 1Varing, and Mr. Herring, Treafurers at Goldfnriths-Hall, according to the faid Ordi- nance ; and that if you shall fail to pay the fame within eight Days after the Date of this Ticket, you shall forfeit for every Day after the eight Days the Twentieth part of the Sum fo fefs'd, and shall likewife pay TwoShillings in every Pound, over and above, to the Colle (tors that are appoin- ted to levy the fame, if you shall fuffer yourfelf to be diífrain'd.
