S. Then the de. vil taketh and fets him on a pinacle, and bids, Call thy [elf dorm headlong, for it is *ritten, He jhll give his Angels charge over thee, &c. As if he had Paid, Ifthou haft Mal confidence on God and his Word, as thou pretendeft, (hew it by cafting thy felf down, for thou hafta Word between thee and the ground, if thou claret truft God ; and truly, though Chrift had his an- fwer ready, and was prepared to receive his charge on the right hand and on the left, being fo compleatlyarad that no tem- ptation could come amiffe, yet note we, Satans temptations on Chrift, were like the Serpents motion on a rock, (of which So- ro 33.i lonlon (peaks) that makes no impreflion, no dint at all, but on P us they are as a Serpent on land or duff, that leavesa print, when not in the heart, yet in the fancy, colours that which is next door to it, and fo the object there is ready to flip in, if great care be not obferv'd, efpeciallywhen he doth thus change his hand, as when we have refifled one way, fall on afrefh another, yea, plant his fucceeding temptationupon our very refiflance in the former. Or firft, he comes and labours to dead the heart in duty, but the Chriftian too watchful for him there, 'then he is puffing of him up with an opinion of his enlargement in it, and ever he keeps his flieft and molt fublimated temptati- ons for thehit.
