A PraCTical Expofition ment, that may·not be rooted our by the .ViolenCe ?f Men, nor abandoned through the Judgment of God. An~ to a Perfethon of Puruy and Holinefs by the powertul D1fpenfauon of Gofpel·Ordmances, attended by the Efficacious Concurrence of rho Holy SpiTit. But, . Secondly, This Petition, likewife refpeEl:s the Church Tril1mphant in Heaven: Nor is this praying for the Dead a Thingju!lly condemned of Superftition and Folly for w.e pray not tor them to. alt~r their State, which is impious and ridiculou~, and a'fop· ptlh Confequent upon the Ftgment of Purgatory, but we pray for the Church Triumph~nt only. in ge~etal, that thofe Thing~ whic~ are as yet defe~ive in it may be IUpphed: For certamly wher.efoever ~here IS any k1nd oflmperfetl10n we have ground ro pray for the Removal of It, efpemlly when God bath encouraged us to it by Promife that he will remove it: And therefore, .. Fira, We. may well pray that the whole Body. Myflical ofJefus Chrifl, and eYety Member of It, may be brought to the full Frumon of Heaven and Happinefs, that daily more may be admitted into the Heavenly Fellowfhip, till tbejr Numbers as well as their Joys be Confummate. And, Secondly, We may pray thattbe Bodies of all the SaintS that have flept in their Beds of Earth fwm the beginning of the World may be raifed again om of the Duft, and united to their Souls, and fOr ever made Glorious in the Kingdom of Heaven; for both thefe Things are abfolutely promifed, the one, Rom. 8. 29, 30. that rhofe whom God bath Culled, and Jujlified, he willlikewife G!oriji(. And the other is, r Theif. 4· 16. T.be Dead m Cbrift jba/1 arife. And certainly wharfoever may be the Objed of our Faith, Hope may be ,rhe Subjea of our Prayers. ' And this every true Chriftian longs and breatbLS after, that thefe Days of Sm and Mife!y may he fhonned~ that Chrifl would come in his Glory, rha.t bis Mediatory Kingd om being fulfilled, it might be delivered up unto the Father; .and rhar we all m1ght he one:, as the Farber is in him, and he in the Father. Even fo _come, Lord ](jus, come guickly. And thus I have finifhed the Second Petition, Thy Kingdom come. Jr · The Third follows, Thy Will be done in Earth, ~sit is , in H,aven. This now follows upon the former in a mofi rational and admirable Method; for as before we pray that the Kingdom of God might come, as the belt adapted Means to Hallow his ]\lame; fo now we pray that his Will may be done by us) as the deareft Declaration that we are rhe Subj t& of his Kingdom. Firfr, What this Will of God is. · S€condly, how his Will may be faid to be done. Thirdly, What Force this Panicle, rby, thy Will, carries in it, and what it de· notes. Fourthly, What is meant by God's Will being done "in Earth. And all thefe with all Perfpicuity and Brevity. Fir!t, What this Will of God is. The former refpe£1:s what fhall be done by him, the latrer what ought to be done by us: Both thefe in Scripture are frequenrly called the Will of God. Firfr, GOd's Puipofe is his Will; yea, it is n;ore properly his Will than his Pre· cepts are; ,for ·by this God doth abfolutely dctermtne what !hall be, and what !hall not be; and all Things in the World take their Place, and are ranged in their f€:veral Stations; and the whole Series of Caufes and Effe8:s are governed by the Ordination and Appointment of this his Sovereign Will. And therefore it is fa id, E'pb. 1. 11. That God worketh all Things occording totbc Counfe! ofhis own Will. And Pja!. IJ5· 6. Wbatfoever the Lord pleafed tbat he did in lieaven> in Eartb,. in t.be Sea, and in all deep Places.
