on the Lord'_s. Prayer. Now Right ro aTemporal Enjoy.ment is T~reefold, either Natural, or Spiritual, or Civil. Natural by Creation, Spiritual by Regeheration, and Civil by Humane and Legal Confritution. Firfr As for the Natural Right by Creation that was ohce found in .Adam, who was m;de the vifihle Lord of the Univerfe, and all Things put unaer his Fe". We may read his Patent _and Cbarter, Gen. 1. 28 . .f:ndGodjaid unt? '?im, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenifh the_ E_artb, ~nd {ubdue lf, and have ~omzmon over_rhe_Fowl of the .Air and rrver every Lwmg Tbrng t'hat moveth upon tbe Earth. But this R1ghr w~;; have loh, and can call nothing ours upon this Account. Only as Prinas allow Traitors and .!Ualefa[/ors Provifion in their Prifon till they come to Execution, fo God allows many Wicked Men many Earthly Enjoyments out of the meer Bounty of Prifon-Provifion, to keep them alive till they are brought forth to their Execution. This Natural Right therefore hein~ loft, there fucceedl in th_e room of ir, Secondly, A Spintual Rtgbt to Earthly Comforts; and thiS belongs unto all thofe who themfelves do belong to Cbrift; for be is made the Heir of all Things. And all Things both in Heaven and llarrh. are c?nfigned over. unto him by.~ Deed of Gift from God his Father, and they herng united unro Chnft, and hiS Sptrttual Offi~rmg, are HeirS with Chrift, and Co·heirs of all that ample Dominion which Chrilt himfelfpolfelfeth. And upon this Ground the .Apoftle tells the Corintbians, in 1 Cor. 3· 2 z 23 . .fill Things are yours, the ~Vorld, Things prtfent, and Things to come, all are yo~rs; and he fubjoins this Rcafon for it! for ye arc Cbrifi's. But. yet this Spirilua! Right is not to be extended JP an Ufurpatwn upon the Temporal Enjoymems of orhers. For Grace and Holinefs being a Thing wholly inward and invifible cannot confer any outward Title. For this, Thirdly, Is given by another Right) whkh is Civil, according to the Conftitution of Humane Laws, and the Pioct: fs in Courts of Humane Judicature; for Law is the only Diftributer of meum m:d tuum. 1\nd we can call nothing ours which is not fo, or .ought not to be fo, by the ~enre_nce of the Law undd which we live; and hi! that detainoth any Thing which the S<ntence of the Law adjudgeth to another is guilty of Theft and Robbery. Now when we-pray for our Daily Bread, We pray, Firfi, That God would give us the good Things of this Life to he obtained by us in a Lawful, Regular, Manner. Secondly, That he would blefs and increafe thofe good Things that are rightfully our own. Thirdly, That he would befrow upon us a Spiritual Right in whatfoever we enjoy through ]efus Cluifr, who is the Heir and Polfelfor of all'Things. And, · Fourthly, We pray rhat we may not defire nor covet that which is another's: For we are taught to pray only for that which we may ju!lly call ours, to which we have as well 'a Civil as a Spiritual Right and Title. And thus much for the Third Particular. Fourthly, We have in the VVords the Limitation of the Petition in refpe8:ofTime, Give us this Day our Daily Bread. And indeed rhere is great Reafon why we fbould pray for it tbis Day, for we every Day frand in need of Relief and Supplies from God. Our VVants and our Troubles grow up thick about us ; and unlefs God made daily Provifio"' for us we !hall he over·run by them. FoodnourifheshutaDay, and that which we receive this Day wilt not fuffice us to Morrow. There is a continual Spring and Fountain ofNeceffhies within us, and therefore we mufr have condnual Recourfe unto God by Prayer that he' would daily fatisfie and fupply our V V ants as they daily rife up about us, Again, by teaching us to pray for our Temporal Comforts tbi< Day, our Saviour tacitly intimates ro us t~at we fhould be content with our daily Allowance. It is e· nough if we have our Drmenfum, our appointed Food, for the Day ; to Morrow is in God,s Hand, and the Care of it is his, and not ours, and therefore he bids us take no Thought/or to Morroro; ·tbat is, with no tormenting, carking, and defpondingt Thoughts, Matth. 6. 34· And indeed if we are provided for this Day we may well reft content and fatisfied in the Providence of God, fince he bath engaged his VVord of Promife, That be will never leave fl..&, nor for:fakc m. Now in this Pm of the Petition there are fundry Things we pray for. As, Firfr, VVe pray for Life itfelf that it may he prolonged whilfi God bath any Ser· vice for us to do in the VVorld. To this very End we pray for Daily Bread, that Life may be maintained and pr&rved by it. Secondly, ::~Gr
