The my– !l:ical Habit of Chrift the celeftial Spoufe is defcribed, .upon which Place Brentius thus paraphrafes. All thy Garments fmell of Myrrh, and Aloes, and Caffia, out of the Ivory Palaces, whereby they have made thee glad, that is, all the Garments wherewith thou art ap– parelled, and which can be produced for thy Ufe, are not compofed of wooden or vile Materials, but brought from Ivory (and moft precious) Repolirories (for thefe are called the Houfes or Palaces of Garments) they yield no other Odor, but Myrrh, Aloes, and Caffia, that is, a moft fragrant and odoriferous Scent in which thou takeft pleafure; that is, that moft fweet Fume which Chrift himfelf and his Apoftles by preaching the Gofpel have fpread not only in 'judea, but in all Parts of the World, Luke x. •7• 18, 19, &c. 2 Cor. ii. 15, 16. Chrift is faid ~affively to be put on by Believers, Rom. xiii. q .. Gal. iii. 27. when l>e dwells in their Hearts by Faith, Eph. iii. 17. and makes them partakers of his ce– teftial Benefits. The Apoftles are faid to be endued with Strength from on High, Luke xxiv. 49· when they receive the Gift of the Holy Spirit as it is expounded, Afls i. 8. On the ~ther Side, a Man is faid to put on the Spirit of God, when it powerfully fpeaks or operates in or by him, as a Man that goes forth in order to any Work amongft Men <:avers himfelf with a Garment, ']udg. vi. 34· I Chron. xii. 18. 2 Chron. xxiv. 20. , Mofls calls ']ehovah A BANNER, when ha gave the Altar he erected a Name, m;,• >DJ ']ehovah nijfi. 'I'he Lord my Banner, Exod. xvii. I 5· that is, the Lord is my Helper both now and hereafter, againft the Amalekites, and all other Adverfaries.lfa. xi. 10. It 1s faid the M4fiah jha!l jland for an Enjign (or Banner) ofthe People, by which his kingly Office is noted, as this paffage is quoted, Rom. xv. 12. He jhaliT'ife to reign over the Gentiles; for a Banner or Trophy is a Sign of Victory, Superiority and Lordfbip, inaf– much as the People are faid to aB: under the .Banner of the Prince. Chrift is the only Ajjlum or Refuge, where fuch as Ay to him by Faith are protected and kept fafe from the fpiritual Enemy, as the Soldiery repair to the Standard of their General where they are fecure. See Cant. ii. 4· Pfal. lx. 4• 'I'hou haft given a Banner to them that fear thee, that it may be difp!ajed becaufe ofthe 'I'rttth, which may be truly applied to Chrift; upon thefe Words Ainfworth fays, that the Word (Banner) is applied to the Flag orEnfign of the Gofpel, !fa. xi. I2. iKlix. 22. and lxii. 10. Here to David and his Victory, to be High difplayed, or to ufe for a'Banner, which bath the Name of lifting High, !fa. lix. '9· The Spirit of the Lord !hall lift up a Standard againft him, that is, he !hall bring to pafs, that Chrift fuall be that Standard (or Banner) of the People, for as Soldiers convene or repair to the military Standard, fo the Saints,are· gathered together by the Knowledge of Chrift, the Captain of their Salvation. . A ROD and Staff is attributed to God and our Savior Chrift, Pfal. xxiii. 4· 'Ihy Rod and thy Staff comfort me, of which we have fpoke in the Metonymy of the Sign for the Thing lignified. Pfal. xlv. 6. and ex. 2. Heb. i. 8. The Rod or Sceptre of Chrift, fig– nifies his faving Word whereby he directs his Church and People. See !fa. ii. 3· The Rod of God, lignifies alfo Caftigation and Punifhment, 'Job ix. 34· and xxi. 9· in both which Places the Cbaldee renders it a Stroke. The King of A.Jljria is called the Rod of God's Anger, Ifa. x. 5· becaufe by him, as with a Rod, he was to chaftife the People, and declare his Wrath againft Sin. See Verfe 24. TheWord has almoft tbe fame Sianification, Pfal. ii. 9· where (the Epithet of Iron being added) it is a Symbol of a ~ore grievous and fevere Punifhment, 'I'bou jhalt break them with a Rod of Iron, viz. fuch contumacious and ftubborn Enemies; that defpife thy Kingdom, whether they be Jews or Gentiles, as Verfe 1, 2.
