Secondly, Elementary Things. God is called FIRE, yea, a conjitming Fire, Deut. iv. 24. ix.3. and xxxii.22 .. lja.x.I7. and lxvi. 15, r6. Ezek.xxi. 31, &c .. which de– notes his Wrath agamft Sm, which confumes thofe m1ferable Perfons, agamft whom 1t burns, as Fire does Stubble. God is faid to be a LAMP, Candle, or Lamhorn, when he exhibits his Grace and Favor to any, 2 Sam. xxii. 29. 'l'hou art my Lamp, 0 Lord. Pfal. xviii. 28. For thorl wiltlight my Candle (or Lamp) the Lord my God will enlightm my Darknefs; that is, he is the Author of my Light, Felicity, and Salvation. So the Candle of God is faid to jhine upon Job's Head, Job xxix. 3· in the fame Senfe, as the following Words .!hew, viz. '!'he Spirit of Man is the Candle of the Lord, fearching all the inward Parts of the Belly, that is, the Lord kindles a Light in Man, by which he looks into the mott inward Things; and therefore it !hines in the Mind of a wife King, that he may fearch out a Matter, and take away the Wicked, Prov. xxv. 2, 3· The Word of God is called a L amp, or Cmzdle, Pfal. cxix. z05. Prov. vi. 23. 2Pet. i. 19. becaufe of the Light of faving lnRitutions which it exhibits to Bdievers. To the Element of /fiR belongs, when BLOfVING, or a Blajl, or Breathing, is at– tributed to God, by which his Divine Grace and Refecrion, is noted, as a cool Breeze refrethes a Mdn in Summer's Heat--thus fome aptly tranfiate that Paffage, Ifa.lvii.I6. For I will not centend for ever, neither will I be always wrath, the Spirit before me jha/1 roll itfelf, and I will caufe a Blowing, that is, the Holy Spirit, which I will fend to for– rowful and contrite Believers, !hall (as it were) opon itftlf to them, dwell in them, and in the Heat of Temptations, !hall with a comfortable Guft or Breeze refrelh their fainting Spirits. Sometimes it denotes Divine Wrath and Vengeance, as a !hang Wind overthrows what is before it, and inflames the Fire, Job iv. 9· By the Blajl of God they perijh (that is, the Wicked) and by the Breath of his Noflrils are they confumed. Pfal. xviii. 15. At thy Rebuke, 0 Lord, at the Bla.ft of the Breath of thy Nojlrils. lfa. xxx. 33· '!'he Breath of the Lord, like a Stream of Brimjlone doth kindle it, that is, Hell, as Brimftone is a great Nourither of Fire, fo the infinite and never-ceaGng Wrath of God, fi1all be (as it were) an eternal Nourifi1er or Continuer of Hell; for whilft a Pair of Bellows blow the Fire, it burns; fo the Breath of the Lord, (viz. his Wrath) !hall be always of Efficacy to torment the Souls and Bodies of the Damned in that infernal Stream of Brimftone. To the Element of Water belongs where God is called a Fountain ofliving Waters, Jer. ii. '3· and xvii. 13. becaufe he is the'indeficient Author of all Life and Refre!h– ment, here and hereafter. Pfal. xxxvi. 9· With thee is the Fountain of Life, which is to be undertl:ood in the fame Senfe, which Verfe 8, is called the River of his Pleajiwes.
