Sect. 4· before: For falfe Teachers feem to be orthodox to many, &c. The other Appellations in each Text do confirm this Expofition. . 4· Their Celerity or Swiftnefs, becaufe we fee the Clouds to be earned under Heaven with ,•ery quick Speed, as if they did fly, being hurried on by the lmpetuofity of the Wind, !fa. xix. 1. Behold the Lord rideth up01z a foJJift Cloud, and jhall come into Egypt, that is, he will fpeedily and unexpectedly puni01 the Eg;ptimzs as if he did fly upon the Clouds. See lfa..lx. 8. Pftrl. civ. 3· Nahttlil i. 3· Some think that the Prophet ufed this Phrafe becaufe the Egyptiam looked upon Clouds of this Kind to be ominous, whereas Egypt was not wont to be troubled with Clouds. A 'l"EMPES'l", (which properly fignifies a fudden and very· ftrong Wind or Whirl– wind, fometimes accompanied with Thunders, Rain and Hail) when attributed to God, lio-nifies that his dreadful Wrath and tremendous Punifhments !hall be poured out upon Si~ners: But if •ttributed to Men, it metaphorically denotes Difturbance, and violent lnvafions. There are* two principal Words in the Hebrew, which are fame– times joined together, as •vo a TVhirlwind, or Tempeft, which denotes the Wrath of God and Punifi>menr, Job ix. I7· Pfal.lxxxiii. Whence come Terrors or Storms of Famine, Lam. v. IO. that is a moll: vehement F"mine by which Men are cmelly agitated and confumed, as if it were by a Whirlwind or Tem– peft. But if the Word be attributed to Nfcn, it denotes Confufion of Mind, as the Air is difturbed and troubled with Whirlwinds and Storms, 2 Kings vi. I r. and an hoftile Attack· or ruinous lnvafion, Dan. xi. 40. See Pfal. lv. 3, 8. 'l"HUNDER, (to which Lightning is joined) becaufe they terrify, penetrate and fometimes deftroy the Creatures, is only attributed to God, and by a JV!etaphor lignifies, 1. His MPjefty and Glory, Pfal.lxxxi. 7· I anfwered thee in the fecret Place of 'Thun– der. The Chaldee in a hidden Place, in the Houfe of my Majefty, where the Spheres of Fire refound before me.-Ill)'ricus: '!"he Senfe is in my hidden Seat, or Hiding-place, in a thick Cloud I heard thee in the Red-Sea, terrifying the Egyptians with 'l"hunder and Lightning. See Exod. xix. 16, IB. Pfal.lxxvii. 18, 19. 2. His Wrath and Punifhment, I Sam. ii. to. '!"he Advcrfaries of the Lord jhall be broken to Pieces: Out of Heaven jhall he thunder ttpon them, thar is, in his Anger he will grievoufly punifh and deftroy them. See Ifa. xxix. 6. Pfal. xviii. ~; and the following Verfes, Rev. xvi. I8, 21.
