Men may be happy without them; worldly Riches are nor abfolutely necelfary. VI. All otherPortions have their mixtures, they are as one ohfcrves, a Bitter-fweet: Many Snares and Evils attend a Man that has a great Portion of worldly Things. VII. Other Portions are com– mon to Men, to the vile!!: of Men; in every Nation Riches are often given without Diftinc'l.ion, Saints and Sinners have them alike. D IS PAR IT Y. V. But God is a Portion that is abfolutely necef– fary; he that h.uh all other good Things and not God, no I nrereft m him, is miferable, and fhall be damned. VI. But God is a pure unmixt Portion, there is nothing in him but Goodnefs; L ight, and no Darknef,; Joy, and. no Sadnefs; Life, and rio Death; and this they will find when they come to the full Polfeflion and Enjoyment of Him. VII. But God i~ a peculiar Portion; he gives himfelf only to his own People, to his own EleCt; He is, (fa1th David) the Strength of my Heart, and my Portion for ever ; this God is our God, Pfal. lxx. 26. L am. iii. 24. The Lord, faith a gracious Soul, is my Portion ; there is not a wicked Man in the World can fay fo. VIII. Another Portion is not VIII. But God is an univerfal Portion; what~ univerJal, it doth not comprehend foever is good it is to be had in him, whether for all good Things; it may lie in Profit or Delight, he comprehends all Portions, Gold, in Silver, in L and, Houfes, all Things that are defirable; fo he that hath bm nor comprehend all Portions, God hath nil, nothmg is good without him, no– or all good Things whatfoever. thing can be evil that falls upon a Saint rhat hath . him ; God is good in every Thing, and he is good of himfdf alone, when every Thing elfe is gone; Having nothing yet po.!Je.fling all 1:hit~gs, 2 Cor. vi. 10. IX. OrhdPortions may be tak– en away by Thieves, wafted or con– fumed hv Fire. X. O[her Portions may be great, and yet nor fuitable in all Refpetl:s to all Perfons, and at all Times ; what will Gold or Silver fignify to the Soul I What Help can it ad– miniller at Death I XI. Other Portions cannot fa– tisfy rhe Man that enjoys them, all the World cannot fill the Soul, nor give full SatisfaCtion to it. XII. Other Portions may be fpenr, a Man by living upon them, may wafte them; rhe Prodigal Son wafted all his Portion. XIII. Other Portions are but for a Time, rhey pafs away, and Riches are uncertain Things, they are up– on the Wing, they will not abide for ever. XIV. The largefl: Inheritance cannot make a Man abfolmely happy. IX. God is a Portion that none can rab the Soul of, no Fire can defl:roy the Soul's Inheritance. X. But God is a fuitable Portion to all Perfons; in all Things, and at all Times; this Portion fuits the Condition of the Soul, the Neceffities of the Soul, the Wants and Defires of rhe Soul. Is the Soul blind, naked, fick, wounded, poor I Suit– able Supplies in thefe Refpetl:s, and all others, are to be had in him. XI. But God is a Portion that fatisfies him who hath a Parr and Interdt in him; Jvfy Soul /hall be Jatisjied as with Marrow and Fatnefs, Pfal. lxiii. 5, 6. He gives the Soul full Content and Satis– faction. XII. But God is a Portion that tan never be fpent: The more a Saint lives upon his Por– tion, the more rich he is, the more comes in upon him, God is an unexhauftible Portion. XIII. But God is a never-failing Portion, he is not only a Portion now, but will be a Portion hereafter, a prefenr, and yet a future Portion, a Portion whiHt we live, a Portion when we die, and a Portion to Eternity. XIV. But God is able to do all Things that will make up a full and complete Happinejs. ( r.) He gives Peace and Serenity of Mind. (2.) Fills with Joy and Peace in believing, John xvi. 33• Pfal. xxix. 11. I Pet. i. 18. (3.) Seals up to the Day of Redemption, Eph. i. 12. and iv. 30. (4.)
