THEGreek Word, Mi~m~. is thought by Erafmus to be peculiar to the Scripture,· as being not eltewhere ufed; and doubts whether it fi10uld be rendered Mediator, Reconciler, or Intercej[or. The Term, as applied to Chrift, is borrowed from Perfons, whofe Office it is to reconcile fuch Parties as are at variance, being as it were in the middle, betwixt both, foliciting the Caufe of each to the other, till they bring them to Concord or Agreement. It is thus defined by Iilyricus: Mediator is dicitur, qui in– ter duos parum inter fe congruentes, aut etiamfibi invicem Hoftes, medius eft, & utriufque nomine cum altero agit, promovens conciliationem, &c.-ff<l.tique tamdiu apud utramque par– tem alterius nomine laborat, donee eas in confenfum& paftionem deducat. The Term is applied to Mofes typically, Deut. v. 4, 5· with Gal. iii. '9· but really and antitypically to Jefus Chrift, Heb. xii. 24. Col. i. zo. Rom. v. 10, I 1. I Johlt ii. I. A MEDIATOR. I. A Mediator implies a Diffe– rence between two Parties, Gal. iii. 20. I!. A Mediator properly ligni– fies a Middle-Man, a Reconciler. Ill. A Mediator oftentimes is appointed to make up Differences, that arife between two Parties up– on a Breach of Covenant. IV. AMediator mu£1: be aPer– fan willing to undertake the great Work and Tranfaction of making Peace. - PARALLEL. I. SIN made a great Hreach between God and Man : God is mtgry with the Wicked every Day, Pfal. vii. 11. Hence by Nature Mankind are faid to be theChildren of Wrath, Eph. ii. 3· "[be carnal Mind is Enmity againjl God, Rom. viii. 7· II. Jefus Chri£1: is a Mediator between God and Man, 1 John i. 2. He is not only God, but Man; not only Man, but God : a blelfed Reconciler of Man to God, and of God to Man, Gal. iv. 4• 5· Ill. The Difference originally that is between God and Man, did arife from Man's breaking God's Covenant, Ifa. xxiv. 5· God and Man were in Peace and Concord, whiHl: Man ftood in the State oflnnocency; but when he fell, Chrift came to make up that Breach, lleb. viii. 8.
