N F E R E N C E & I. pROM hence we may perceive what a miferable Condition Mankind had involved themfelves in by reafon of Sin, utterly impoverifhed, and brought to Be<>– gary, Debtors to God's Juftice for the Breach of the Law, owing ten thoufand T~lenrs, and not a Farthing to pay, Matt. xviii. 24. and had been call: into the eternal Prifon of Darknefs, had not Jefus ftept in and become our Surety. 2. What Grace and unfpeakable Favor is here! How much hath God out-done Mortals ! He fought out a Surety to fatisfy for our Sins, who were not only ill-natur– ed Debtors, but curfed and mort guilty Rebels, who deferved nothing but Death, and Chains of Darknefs. Though he cloth not pardon us without a Price, yet rather than we fhould be without Remiffion, his own Son fhall be the Ranfom. 3· Moreover, we may admire the great Myftery of our Redemption! Let Mea take heed how they contemn any Part of the Deptlis of God, becaufe they feem to overrop and outdo their depraved Reafon. · 4· Here are Tidings of great Joy to broken and undone Sinners. There is a Way open for free Commerce and Trading with God again: Though he did not regard us whilll we ftood under the old Covenant, being miferable Beggars and Bankrupts; yet he delights to have Commerce and Dealing with us in a way of Grace, through the CompaCt made with Chrill our Surety. 5· Let Saints hold up their drooping Heads and Hearts, their Debts are paid: '!'he Lord bath laid on him the Iniquity of us all, Ifa. liii. 6. Why fhould any think the Conditions of the Gofpel are hard, or Chrift's Com– mands grievous I What you cannot do, Chrift hach undertaken to help you in, and fee done by you. He bath wrought all our Works in us, Ifa. xxvi.. 12. My God jhall fupply all your Wants, Phi!. iv. '9· My Grace is fujficient for thee, 2 Cor. xii. g. 7. Moreover, let us confider what Benefits do accrue to Believers, by virtue of Chrill's Suretifhip. · Firjl, By this Means we are delivered from the Hands of J uftice, and Curfe of the Law, and Wrath of God: Chrift hath redeemed us from the Curfe, being made a Curfe for us, Gal. iii. I 3· · Secondly, We owe our Covenant-Relation, firll, unto God's Grace; and fecondly, to Jefus, our bleffed Surety and Mediator's undertaking: I have manifejled th;· Name to the Men which thou gavejl me, &c. John xvii. 6. 'l'birdly, This is the Ground of the Saints Support againll the Power of Sin, and indwelling Corruption: '!'hanks be to God, through our Lord Jefus Chrijl, &c. Rom. vii. 25. Fourthly, From hence we may groundedly expeCt Succour in Temptations: I have prayed for thee, Luke xxii. 32.
