Elements, &c. SPECIES, is a more fpecial Title attributed to diverfe Particulars under it, as aNlan, to John, Peter, 'James, or any other Indicuidua!. The AJfeflions of 'I"ropes, are Three. 1. A Metonymy • is a 'I"rope when a Caufe is put for the Effeil,_or the E.lfeil for the Cauf<, the Subjeil for the Ad;unil, or the Ad;unil for the Sub;eil. :There are four Kinds of Metonymies, anfwering to the four Kinds ofCaufes, viz, I. Efficient. 2. Material. 3· Formal. 4· Final. /1. Metonymy of the Caufe is ufed in Scripture, when; I. The Per[on ailing is put for the 'Thing done. • 2. When the Inftrument by which a Thing is done, is put for tire 'Thing effeiled. 3· When a 'Thing or Action is put for the Effeil produced by that A<lion, of which in Order. I. 'The Per[on ailing for the 'I"hing ailed or effeiled. I. THE H 0 L Y SPIRIT is put for its Effeils and Operations, as 2 Cor. iii. 6. Where by the Term Letter we are to underfland the Law written in Tables of Stone, which required· petfett Obedience, and which no Man can perform becaufe of Corruption, therefore that Law can pronounce nothing_ but a Sentence of Death: But by Spir·it is meant the faving Doe. trine of the Gofpel, wh1ch denve~ us Ongmal from the Spirit (confidered as a moft mer. ciful Comforter) who fets it home upon the Soul, firing and preparing it thereby for eter– nal Life; fuitable to John vi. 63. 'rhe Words that I fpeak are Spirit and Life; that is, they are from the Spirit of (Jod, and being received by Faith confer Salvation, through the Grace of God, Rom. viu. 2.
