In refpeCI: of Angels, he is the Head of all Principalities and Powers, Eph. i. 2 I. 2. In refpetl: of Man, the whole Race of Man; the Head of every Man is Chrift, I Cor. Xl. 3· 3· In refpeCI: of the Powers of the World ; he is the Head of Kings and Princes, and all the Powers of the Earth. 4· He is the Head of the Gofpel-Buildin<Y: 'l'he Stone which the Builders rejefled the fame is become the Head-Stone of theCorne~, Ac7s iv. II. ' 5· He is the Head of the Body, the Church, which alludes to a natural Head, and . cloth agree therewith in divers RefpeCI:s; of which take thefe Examples, Eph. i. 22. Col. i. x8. MET A PH 0 R. x. THEHead is the higheftPart of the Body, more loftily placed than all the reft of the Members. II. The Head is the Seat of the Senfes. There is the Eye to fee, the Ear to hear, the Organs to fmell and tafte, by, which Things are truly diftinguilhed, even the good.from the bad, for the Benefit of the whole Body. Ill. The Head is the common Treafury of the whole Man ; what– foever comes is lodged there for the reft of the Members. PARALLEL. I. THE Son of God, as he was higher by Birth than Men, yea, than the greatefi: of Men, Kings, arid mighty Potentates of the Earth, &c. fo is he by Place and Office: God bath anointed him with the Oil of Gladnefs above all his Fellows, and Jet him over the Works of his Hands, Heb. i. 9· I!. The Son of God, the myftical or fpiritual Head, is the Seat of the fpiritual Senfes. There is rhe clear feeing Eye, the perfeCt hearing Ear, the pure, true, and infallible Tafte, by which. Things are difl:inguillied arighr, the good from the bad, for the Benefit of the whole Body ofthe Church. Ill. Jefus Chrift, as a public Perfon, and Head of his Church, is Receiver-General, and com– mon Treafury of the whole Body. Whatfoever came originally from God, for the Good and Be– nefit of the Church, is lodged in Chrift as Media– tor, and Head of his Church. As David faid, All my Springs are in thee, Pfal. lxxxii. 7· fo may the Church fay of Chrift, We beheld his Glory, as the Glory of the only-begotten Son of God, full of Grace and 'fruth, John i. 14. It pleafed the Father, that in himjhould all Fulncfs dwell, Col. i. 1 9· IV. The Head cloth tranlinit, or caufe to be tranfmitted, by way of Communication, all the Sup– plies accruing to all other Parts of the Body, whether it be Eafe from Pain, by Application of Com– fort, &c. V. The Head is the very Foun– tain of Stre~gth, and cunning Po– li<;y, fo ugnified concerning the Ser– pent: He jhall bruife thy Head, &c. Gen. iii. 17VI. The Head is the Place where Burthens are carried, &c. Three Bafkets were on the Baker's Head, Gen. xl. x6. IV. The Son of God doth tranfmit, or caufe to be tranfmitted, by way of Communication, all the Supplies of the myftical Body, whether it be Peace of Confcience, Eafe for Soul-pains, by an Appli– cation of his Blood, and Spirit to comfort. It is by him, that the whole Body, by Joints and Bonds, have Nourilhment adminiftred one to another, as knit together in all Parts, and increaung with the Increafe of God, Col. ii. 19· Of his Fulnefs have we all received, mzd Grace for Grace, John i. 16.
