Upon which, Sanflius fays in his Comment on lfa. xlix. 'Iherefore they do not rightly judg;e, who from the Hebrew Reading fay, that Mofes died in the Kifs of the Lord: for that Tradition is not from the Hebrew Text, but from the 'fargum which is attributed to Jonath. Uziel, who renrlers '!l-))1 at the Mouth of the Lord, Ad Ofculwn v erbi Domini, that is, according to the Kifs of the Mouth of the Lord. But what is fpoken of the Mouth of the Lord, is better to be referred to the Trope An– thropopathia, of which we !hall hear hereafter. 'Ihe 'I"ONGUE is. put for Speecb, Prov. xxv. I 5· A foft Tongue breaketh the Bones, that is, amild, civil, and courtc<)US Speech; fo Jer. xviii. 18. *Let usfmite him for that 'fongite (l11VJJ) that is, for his importunate, unleafonable and odious Spe_ech. But more efpecially for the Idiom or particular Language of Nations. Afls ii. 4, 11. That is, in a Language which the People u!lLior!l:and not, &c. The LIP is put for Speech, Gen. xi. 1. And the whole Earth was of one Lip, and of on< Word, that is, of one Language, and of one Speech, or Idiom of fpeaking, the Chaldee fays of one 1ongue, and one Speech. That the Hebrew Language is meant here, (which in lfa. xix. t8. is called the [Lip of Canaa11] we tranOate it Language by the fame Tropo: And which by the Targ. J erufal. and R. Salomon upon the Place is called the Holy 'T•ngue) is !hewed elfewhere. Neither was Hebrew the peculiar Name of that Language in thofe Times, becaufe there was no Need of a Term of Di!l:intlion, there being no 0ther Speech in the World, till after the Confufion of Tongues, and fcattering of the People at Babe!.
