Book II.- CHRIST A LA M B. 377 MET AP H 0 R. I. THE Lamb is a very innocent and harmlefs Creature. But– linger calls it a Symbol of Inno– cency. It doth no wrong or Inju– ry to any. II. The Lamb is made a prey of, and ·often worried by Dogs, Wolves, and other evil Beafis. III. The Lamb is a meek and patient Creature, bearing Wrongs, not feeking Revenge upon them that fl:rike and abufe him. IV. The Lamb is filent, when brought to the Slaughter, doth not cry, complain, nor fl:rive, .as other Creatures do. V. The Lamb is a lovely and very delightful Creature; hence Uriah's ·wife is compared to it, 2 Sam. xii. 3, 4· VI. The Lamb is a contented Creature; let the Shepherd put it into what Patlure he pleafe, it grumbles not, but feems very well fatisfied. VII. The Lamb is a clean Beafr,. whofe Flefh God appointed for Food ; and the Flelh of no Beart, is more generally prized, efpecially it its firfi coming, than Lamb. ~ PARALL E L. I. JESUS Chrifi is of a fweet, quiet, and harm– lcfs Nature and Difpolition: Such a11 High– Priejl became us, who is holy, harmlefs, undefi!ed, feparate from Sinners, &c. Heb. vii. 26. 1!. The Lord Jefus was preyed upon by Devils and wicked Men, who continually worried him, like hungry •nd blood-thirfty Wolves, Lions, and ravening Beafts, whilft he was upon the Earth, Matt. iv. 2, 3- and ii. 14. IlL The Lord Jefus with a meek and patient Spirit bore all thofe vile and grievous Wrongs, ContradiCtions of Sinners, •nd horrid Blafphe– mies, in the Days of his Flelh, without feeking the leafl: Revenge upon them. Altjlin faith, he is compared to a Lamb becaufe of his Mildnefs, Heb. xii. 3- Matt, xxvi. 53· IV. The Lord Chrifl: was filent, when he was led to be crucif.ed : He is brought as a Lamb to the Slaughter, and as a Sheep before herShearers is dumb, fo he openeth 1101 his Mouth, !fa. liii. 7. He did not c•y, nor cauft his Voia to be heard in the Street. V. Chrift is the Delight of the Father, very lovely in the Eyes of Saints and Angels; nay, what was faid of 'fitus Vejpajian, may fitly bo fpoken of Chrifi, He is the Delight of Mankind, Prov. viii. 30. lfa. xlii. r. VI. Chrift was abundamly fatisfied to become any Thing, and to do whatever the Will of his Father was, though it was to be abafed fo low, as to be born of a poor Virgin, to live in a mean Condition, and to have no where to lay his H ead, , whilft he abode in this howling Wildernefs, Heb, x. 7· John x. r5, 17, 18. Phi!. ii. 7, 8. VII. Chrifl: was ordained of God t-o be the food of our Souls; and there is no Meat fo fwect, or is fo much prized by the Godly, elpecially when they firfr receive him by Faith, as this Lamb. My Flejh is Meat indeed, and my Blood is Drink indeed, John vi. 55· Whofoever hath fed fpiritually on Chrifi, he defireth no better Dainties. VIII. The Lamb was appointed VUI. Chrifl:, the Lamb of God, is our only under the Law for Sacrifice, it was Sacrifice. He was taken from among Men, fepa– to be taken om of ·the Flock, to be rated from Sinners, truly Man. He was a Lamb fever.ed from the reft, to be killed without blemifh, no Spar or Stain of Sin could "•He-Lamb, and without fpot, was be found in him. H e was Jlain or offered up to be offered up to make an Aupon the Crof.s, to make an Atonement for the tenement, and the Bloorl to be Sins of his People ; and his Blood mufi be fprinkled, &c. fprinkled or applied to our Confciences by Faith, I-leb. vii. 26. 1Pet. i. 1, 17, 18, 19. Heb. vii. 27. and xii. 24. IX. Lambs are very profitable Creatures, th~y enrich their Own– ers ; their Fleece and Skins are good for Cloathing. Alfo the* Money of the ancient Patriarchs IX. Chrift enriches all that have Interefi in him, or can lay claim to this Lamb; and his Righteou("els is for our Cloathing. No Money will pafs for currant (as it were) with God, but J efus Chrifr.
