382 THE NAME OF CHRIST LIKE TO PRECIOUS OINTMENT. Book II. S I M I L E. P A R A L L E L. upon the Place; as alfo a free Cornhim, and he is free to part with them, or com– munication of it. :nunicate of his Fulnefs unto us, Col. ii. 3· John !. '4• t6. S I M I LE. I. ALL natural Ointments are of human Compofition, they are compounded by Men, hence called, the Ointment of the Apothecary, Eccl. x. r. God creat– ed the M ate, ials, Man learned the Skill of ufing them. II. Natural Ointments are of great Value, but their vVorth is known and may be computed ; Mary's Box of precious Ointment was valued, but at, or little more than three hundred Pence. Ill. Natural Ointments will not keep their Virtue 1 the mo!1: fra– grant of them in the World, will, though kept never fo clofely and carefully, in time corrupt and lofe its Savor: Dead Flies make the Ointment of the Apothecary to fend forth a)linking Smell. IV. Other Ointment is of a waO:ing Nature; take but one Dram out, and there is an Abate– ment, and fo by little and little it will diminifh, and !brink till it comes to nothing. V. Other Ointments are only good for the Body; one Sort plea– Jeth the fenfual Part, and another makes the Face and Skin of a Man to thine. VI. No one Kind of natural Ointments hath all excellent ~alities in it: fome may be of a fra– grant Smell, but not healing, others may be good for healing, but not of a fragrant Smell. VI!. A Perfon may be anointed with precious Ointment, and in a little Time lole all the Scent and Savor of it. VIII. The Effetrs which are wrought by other Ointments, are not quick and fudden, cannot heal, cleanfe, nor make the Face fmooth and beautiful in a Moment: The Vir"ins that were to delight the Perflan King, mu!1: be anointed fix Months, before their Beauty was perfetr, Eflh. ii. J2, 2 D IS PAR IT Y. I. BUT this fpiritual Ointment was not made by Man; the Divinity ofChri!1: is from ever– lafting, not made, nor created; and his human Nature was filled with the Spirit, he was anointed with the Oil of Gladnefs above his Fellows, that fo he might pour forth this fweet and facred Unc– tion to his Saints, Heb. i. 8. I!. The Lord Chrift is of ine!1:imable Worth, and invaluable; all the Pearls and Diamonds in the World are not worth the leaft Drop or Dram of this good and precious Ointment: thofe that have it, would not part with it for ten Thoufands of Rivers of Oil; one Drop of it infinitely excels all the choicell: Ointments in the Worid. Ill. The Duration of this holy Ointment is fuch, that it will never decay, J efus, and the G race of Jefus is incorruptible; he is as fweet as fragrant, and of the fame Virtue he was in Abraham's and Abel's Time; and fo will abide for ever; for he is without beginning or end of Days : nothing can get into this precious Ointment to make it unfavory to a gracious Soul; the Crofs itfelf is fweet in him, Heb. vii. 3· and xiii. 8. IV. J efus Chrill: hath anointed thoufands of the Godly in all Ages fince the beginning, and yet the Velfel is as full as ever; it is always pouring forth, it ever runs, yea, and that freely too, yet the Ointment cloth not dimini01; there is not in him one Dram lefs than there was at the beginning. V. The fpiritual Ointment is for the fuppling, cleanfing, and healing of the Soul, it caufes an internal Beauty, and puts a Luftre on the inward Man; which God and holy Angels delight in, r Pet. iii. + Ezek. xvi. q, 14. VI.. All Excellencies meet together in Chrill-, there is nothing tl-.ar is of Ufe, Profit, Plea· fure, or Delight, but is to be found in him, yea, and that in the higheft Degree. VII. He that is anointed with this Ointment, will fmell of it as long as he lives; there-will be fome Savor of Jefus Chrift remaining, though hi• Lips and Life may not be always alike, fweet and fragrant. VIII. Such are the EffeCts and powerful Ope– rations of the Lord Jefus Chrift, (this fpiritual Ointment) that no fooner he touches the Blind with his Finger but they fee; and the Lef_ers are c!eaP.fed at a Word of his Mouth, JVIatt. vn1. z. as foon as ever one Drop of this Ontment is applied, by Faith to the Soul, the EfFeCt foliows ; one Moment " fufficient for Chri!1: to accomplifh his Work, thouoh he doth not always work fo fpeedily. · o IX.
