'Ibe Salutation by the Hand (that is, the Writing) of me Paul. This is ordinary, (viz. for a Man's Writing to be calkd his Hand) among the Greeks as Pollt!x and Suidas fay, and among the Latins, fee Cicero lib. vii. Epijl. ad Attic. as alfo in our own Language. '!"be HAND is put for a Gift reached by the Hand, PJal.!xviii.3z. For it was a Cuftom to mea– fore Land by aa extended Cord, and diftribute Inheritances, as in Palefline, which is done in modern Times by a Rod or Perch; therefore the Word ?:1n a Cord, Rope, or Line, is put for the Bounds, Space or ~antity of the Portion ofLand given. Sometimes it is alfo a Metaphor, Deut. xxii. 9· For the Lord's Portion is his People, 'Jacob is the Cord of his Inheritance, that is, a People peculiar to himfelf, and fegregat– ed or divided from the World, fee Pfal. xvi. 6. 'Ibe Lines are fallen mtto me in pleafant Places, yea, ! have a goodly Heritage.-Our Savior, who is here fpeaking by the Pro-– phet, ufes thiS Metaphor to exprefs the Figure or Dt!ineation of the Church, &c.
