Chri£1: is a Root that gives Confolation and SatisfaCtion to all. He was the Root of the Church both before and !ince his Incarnation, both Triumphant and Militant; the Root of Abraham, 'Job, David, &c. and of all the Prophets and Saints that ever had fpiritual Life in them. IV. The Lord Jefus Chri£1: is a Root which neither Men nor Devils can couch, ddl:roy, or dig up, for he is God. A P P L C A T I 0 N. Obj efl. HERE we may enquire, If 'Jefus Chrift be the R oot of David, how is he faid to be the Stem or Branch out of the Root of Jelfe? Is Jelfe Chrift's Root, and yet is Chrift the R oot of J elfe ? Anj Jejfe is the Root of Chrift according to his human Nature, and Chrift is the Root of Jejfe according to his Divine Nature; as he is Mediator, God and Man in one Perfon, he is both thefe, viz. the Root and Branch of 'Jeffe. DoCl:. From hence note, 'I"hat Chrifl is God. I. He is called God, the mighty God, the true God, the only wife God, and God blejjed for ever. 2. He made the World, all Things in Heaven and Earth : He laid the Foundations of the Earth, and the Heavens a•e the Work of his Hands. 3· He upholds all Things, wos before all Things, and by him all Things confi£1:. 4· He is omnifcient, knows all Things, &c. 5· He fearcheth the Heart. 6. He is the Firft and the Laft, Alpha and Omega. 7· He ought co be prayed unto, all divine Worlhip and fpiritual Adoration belongs ro him. 8. He hath Power to forgive Sins. 9· He thought it no Robbery to be equal with God. xo. He had Power to raife himfelf and others from the Dead: Ergo, he is the eternal God, !fa. ix. 6. Jefus Chrift is the Root of Nature, as well as of Grace and Glory, though we run the Metaphor under that Notion, Zech. ii. '9· 'John x. I6. Infer. I. lf Chrift be the Root of all the Grace that the Saints and the Church re– ceive, then from hence we may juftly infer, That all the divine Goodnefs any Perfon or Perfons have in them, they derive from Chrift; it is he that makes one Man to dift"er from another: Who made thee to differ? &c. What haft thou that thou haft not received, 1 Cor. iv. 7· John v. 23. II. From hence we infer, That as Chrift is God, fo he ought to have all the Glory. All fhould honor the Son, as they honor the Father. Ill. Then let us fear to offend him, and let all our Degendance be upon him, :i/c. IV. What is thy State and Condition, Sinner? Thou haft heard Chritt is the Foun· dation and common Root of all Believers, art thou taken out of the dead and corrupt Root of Mankind, viz. the firft Adam, and engrafted into Chrift? Daft thou grow upon this living Root? Does thy Fruit flow from fpiritual Union with him? V. If thou art not taken out of that evil, fruitlefs, and faplefs Root, labor now to be tranfplanted, get an Intereft in the Lord J efus Chrift, the Root of David. VI.
