HUMA N Embaifadors are but weak, mortal, and un– fiable Men, and many rimes can– not accompli!h the Bulinefs they arc employed about; or orherwife, by reafon of Unfaithfulnefs, betray the Right and Prerogative of their Sovereign. II. Emballadors among Men, though nobly defcended, yet al– ways are of a lower Rank than the Prince that fends them. Ill. Embaifadors among Men are employed to make up natio– nal Differences only, and appeafe the Wrath of Men. IV. Embaffildors among Men, at their fid1: Arrival to treat of Peace, appear in much outward Pomp; Splendor, and worluly Grandeur. V. Embaifadors among . Men are fomerimes very long and tedi– ous, when they begin, before they can effect the lifue or Product of their Negotiations. VI. An Embaifador amongMen, when he bath made up a long and de!lructive Breach between King– doms and Nations, and they are at perfect Peace and Friend!hip, yet cannot keep them always fo, but in time new Difcord arifeth, and the Breach is as wide as it was before. CHRIST is God as well as Man, one mighty to fave, perfect, all-wife, 11:able, of one Mind, no ways defective, able to accompli!h all his Pleafure, true to God, highly (landing for his Honor, wills nor that he !hould abate a Titt!e of his Sovereignty; and rather than his Glory fhould be flained in the leaft, to fave Sinners he laid down his own Life, and hath offered whatever the Will and Counfel of God was. IV. When the Lorrl Jefus came, when he appeared to the World, it was in a low, mean, and contemptible Condition, Luke ii. 12. He vailed his Glory, and made himfelf of no Reputa– tion, Phi/. ii. 6, 7, 8. and though his Retinue was glorious, yet invifible to the Men of the World. V. Chrift did the great Work of his Embaify in a !hort Time, By one Offering he ha1h per– feCted for ever them that are limcrified, Heb. x. 14. he foon removed the Enmity by the Blood of his Crofs. VI. This blelfed Embalfador having made Peace between God and Believers, this League and Covenant by means ofthis Mediation is ever– Jailing, this Peace lhall not, cannot ever be broken, it is well ordered in all thefe Things, and fure, 2 Sam. xxiii. 5· Being confirmed by Blood and the Oath of God, Heb. vi. 16, 17. For the Mountains jha/1 depart and the Hills be removed, but m)' Kind– nefs jha/1 not depart from thee, neither the Covenant of my Peace be removed, faith the Lord, that hat/1 Mercy upon thee, Ifa. liv. 10. A P P L I C A T I 0 N. I. THIS may then really teach us to blefs and praife God, for the Lord Chrift the Melfenger of the Covenant, or bldfed Embaifador of Peace between God and us; it was the Father that chafe and fent him on this E:rrand and Melfage. !I. With what due and great Reverence ought we to receive the Lord Jefus, he be– ing the Son of, and reprefents the magnificent King not only of this World but alfo of Heaven? as in the Scripture-parable, Surely, faith he, they will revermce my Son. Ill. Accept of the Terms of Peace offered to you by Jefus Chri11:, and !rubbornly ll:and out no longer; it is your Wifdom to fubmit and yield fpeedily thereunto, for fear · lefl: it !hould be fa id to you, as once to Jerufa!em, &c.
