Part I; .:OF A METONY.MY OF THE CAUSE, )oveth hi$ ·•Life, /hall lofe it ; and he that hateth his *Life, in this World foall keep it zmto eternal Life. This is expreffed, Matth. xvi. 25. thus, For whofoever will fave his Life,- in th~ Greek it is [his Soul]foa!llofe it, a11d whofoever wilt lofe his Life, or Soul, for my fake, jhql/jind it. By the Phrafe, to love his Soul, is meant a Will and Refolu– tion to preferve Ltfe, even by the Demal or AbnegatiOn of the Name ot Chl'ift. And to hate his Soul, .fignifies, that in Comparifon of the Name, Profcffion, and Trurh of Chrifr, the Prefervation of this Life .is a Thing not at all to be valued, bllt that we are ready rather rhan deny him to fuffer even unto Death. It is faid, Luke xiv. 26. If any Man come unto me, and hate 11ot his Father, and Mother, and Wife, and Children, a11d Brethren, and Sijlers, yea and his own Soul (l}u%"') alfo, be cannot be my Difciple. This Text doth not injoin us to hate our Relations (for we ~re commanded to love even our Enemies, Matth. v. 44· Luke vi. 27.) burthe Mean– ino- is, that he that can or will prefer the Comfort or Society of his Natural Relations before Chrijl and his Gofpel is not worth)' to be his Difciple. See Pfal. cix. 16, 17. Prov. viii. 36. a~d xvii. 19. and xiii. 2+ 3· It notes a Declaration of an external Gefture, which is wont to be the Refult of Love, as Mark x. 2 1.. Then Jefus beholding him loved him "'Y""'"'" au/ov, which fignifies not that Chrijl approved his Anfwer, or had therefore any lingular or peculiar Refpect for him, but, (as it were) fweetly fmiled upon him, looking upon his Talk to be child– ifh and ridiculous, even as we finile tipon Children, when they prattle of fuch Things as are in thcmfelves limpie. Verbs of Operation, as t;do, are put for AcquiGtion or Gain, which is the EffeOo of ACtion and Labor, as Gen. xii. 5· The Souls they had made in Chara11, that is, acquired or gotten there. Gen. xxx. 30. And now when}halt l t makefor my Houfe alfo? that is, when Jhall I provide or take Care to get fo much as will be fufficient for my Family. Hence it is faid, Matth. xxv. 1 6.
