An eminent and able Guide :is well fl<ilkd -in all Ways, and able to give DireC\ions in the mofl: difficult Cafes that are very hard to find out. PARALLEL. I I. So the Holv Spirit is .able to guide poor Sinners in all the Ways of God ; he kd j\1ofes and the Prophets under the Law, and led the Apof\les and all the primitive Chri!tians, under the Gofpd-Miniihation. Holy Men of God fpake as they were· moved and guided by the H()ly Spirit, 2 Pet. ii. 2 1. There is no Precept nor Promife of God needful for the Children of Men to be inf\ruC\ed in, but the Spirit in the holy Scripture hath left it upon Record for our DireC\ion aud Confolation ; and what!oever is hard to be under– Hood, that is contained therein; 'The Spirit that fearchetb all 'Things, can open and explain it to a gracious Sotll: The Spirit guides in the Way of Morality, in the Way of Faith and Gofpel-Obedience, in the Way of Church-Conflitution and Difcipline, and in Gofpel-Holinefs and Converfation. III. A faithful Guide gives noIJI. Fir!\, the Danger of Unregeneracy, the common Road that mof\ Men and ·women walk in; the Spirit hath told us pofitively, if we g-' in that Way, we fhall pnifh for ever: Except a Man be born again, he cannot fee the Kingdom of God, 'John tii. 'l· Secondly, The great Danger of the Way of Prefumption. Thirdly, The Danger ofDefpair. Fourthly, The Danger of Idolatry, Herefy, and Error. Fifthly, The Danger of Difobedience to Chrif\'s Commands, Afls iii. 22, 23. Sixthly, The Danger of loving or liking of any one Sin. Seventhly, The Danger of Hypocrify. Eighthly, The Danger of Apof\acy, &c. . JV. An able Guide frees a Man, IV. So the Holy Spirit frees a poor Saint from that commits himfelf to hi, Guidmany Fears and Cares, which attend others, ance, from many Cares and Fears whilf\ he wholly commits himfelf to the Guidance that attend fuch who have lo.f\ of Got!'s 'vVord, and to the DireC\ions of the their Way, and have no Guide. Spirit: Many are at a lofs, and know not what V. GUIDE. l. 0 TBERGuides, though very fkilful, and have good Knowledge of a 'vVay or Motter ~hey undertake to guide Men in, may, notwith!tanding in fome 'Things, mifs; being not infalli– ble, cannot giv.e infallible De– monftrations to all doubtful Per– fans that they are right, and that thofe who follow their Directions, flull never go af\ray. to do, nor which 'vVay to go, whilf\ he rells fatis– fied, refolving to go wholly by this Guide. V. So the Holy Spint in the Scripture of Truth, hath given fuch plain and clear DireClinns in all Cales of moment about Faith and Holinefs, that the Ignorant and Unlearned cannot mifs the Way to Heaven, if they carefully ob1erve the Rules laid down therein.
