What Relief, Succor and faving Benefit any Sinners do receive in this v:orld, or have the Promife of receiving in the World to come, the Gofpel wholly aicribes it in the firft place to God the Father; his Compaf!ion, his Bowels and his Love and Bour.ry is fer forth in the Gofpel to be fuch to his porn· Creatures, that no Tongue is able to exprefs it. He is great and glorious ; Alexmtder is faid to give like himfelf, befure the Father bath our done him and .ilraunah too. He gives not to Kings, bm like a King, yea like the King of Kings, he is wonderful, in Grace and rich Bounty, he is wonderful. I!. Con!Jder, what it is he hath given, what he hath parted with for and to poor Sinners; has he not parted with his choicelt Jewel, his belt and choiceft Trealure! God fo lvved the World that he gave his only begotten Son, that whofoeuer believeth in bim might not perifh but have everlajling Life, John iii. 16. If it had been a Servant, his Noah, his Abm!Jam, his Mofes, his David, his Grace and Bounty had been great : But alas they COtlld not redeem us, none were fountl worthy to open the Buok nor loofe the Seals thereof among!t all the Children oi Men or Saints of God that ever lived. Or had it been an Angel, one of the glorious Seraphims or Cherubims, the Favor had been unfpeakable, confidering what we were: But to think it was and muft be his Son; his only begotten Son that lay in his Bofom, his dearly and well-beloved Son in whom he was well plcafed, a Son that never offended , a glorious Son the Joy and Delight of his Heart. Ill. Confider, whither he fent this his dear Son, and wherefore. I. He fent him into the World. 2. Into a fad \~'orld, a frrange Country where he was not known. 3· He fent him amongO: Enemies, amongfr wicked Men, fuch as hated him and his Father. 4· Nay among!\ Devils. 5· He fent him to be abafed, he was vilified, contemned, and fpit upon, He was deJPifed and rejelled of Men, Ifa. liii. 3· 6. Nay he fent him to die, to pour forth his Soul to Death to become a Ranfom for many, he commanded him to lay clown his Life, Jobn x. 8. IV. Confider, for whofe fake he fent him to fuffer all this. I. Was it for his Friends, fuch that he was beholden to? 2. Or was it for fame dear Relation ? 3· Or was it for fame worthy or deferving Creature that had merited fuch Favor "'"cl Grace from him ! No it was for fuch that were his Enemies, who deferved nothing but Hell and eternal Wrath for ever. V. And la!tly, Confider, what was his great and gloriom Defign in all this. I. Wh,ch was to make Peace, God was in Chrijl reconciling the World to himfelf, 2 Cor. v. '9· 2. To ef'poufe and marry poor Sinners to himfelf for ever. 3· To convey a gracious and legal Pardon to them, and to wafh them from their Sins in the Blood of his everla!ting Covenant, .illls v. 21.
